Yup and he called the Winchester Trapper in 44 magnum, the Kansas City Special. I'd be very happy with my thutty thutty Trapper, if it was a SHTF situation. I have squirreled away about 750rds of both 150gr and 170 gr rounds for just such a occasion.

Just a note of Interest. I made a stand for 2 rifles/shotgun that I can move from room to room so I can keep them at hand whereever I may be. I don't feel weird having them out and it doesn't bother people to much seeing a leveraction rifle on display. I know If I had an AR or an AK on display I would get a more violent reaction from people. Two Leveractions out on display of the same caliber both loaded with extra ammo sittong on a shelf Nearby would be plenty comforting if everything went South.

I love the feel of lever action rifles since I was 6 and my lever action bb gun was darn fun. I now need to find one in 357 or 30-30 to add to my collection.

Winchesters are going up in price because the Plant closed. I would suggest looking at Marlins. The model 1894 is slim and light. If you like a fatter and heavier rifle look at the marlin 336.
Savage also made a good leveraction and you might be able to pick up a good used one. They had a model 99 in 30-30 and also in 300savage, both good guns. |

And if you want to shoot a round that would be even better for defensive purposes, try using the Corbon DPX in 30-30.

many years ago the lever action gun was the king. nothing wrong with it. a many cowboys used one. have you never seen the rifleman on tv. chuck conners was the man with a lever action rifle. you could go for the "rambo" guns or get a good lever action and know how and where it shoots. 30-30 or 35 rem are some of the best lever action guns made.

For years, the only rifle I owned, or could afford, is my Marlin 336C. I am more comfortable with it than any other rifle I own, including my AR-15. Placing a shot at 200 yards is no big deal. The 30-30 is a good round and cuts through brush very well.
When the GHTF, you might also need to hunt for food and I personally feel a lot more confident killing a deer with a 30-30 than a .223. But that's just me. Maybe because I've had it for 34 years, I feel a little attached to it. |

I own an AK and a Marlin 336. I wouldn't feel scared with either one in my hand if the crap hit the fan so to speak.
I also love the way the 336 feels in my hands and its balance. That gun has taken some very big Indiana White Tail deer. Knocks them down pretty well too. It would put a human down very handily.

Heck yeah, it would be (is).
As powerful as an SKS or AK, and it hands with which it is familiar, it is just about as fast to shoot, too. Probably a tad more accurate as well. More ergonomic, easier to handle, etc. And until the GHTF, it won't scare the sheeple too much, either. |
