Hey, smithy's! I've got a Mossburg 500 thatI want to cut down for HD. It has a C-LECT choke on it. My idea is to remove the choke, shorten the tube, AND remount the choke for a legal 18.5 in barrel. need advise on removing & remounting choke. Any body with expierence out there? Thanx, john

John, Ive done several and I always leave
the choke open.

The hard part is centering the front sight/when you
drill and tap.

Is that the externally mounted adjustable choke that you turn to change patterns, AKA "Poly Choke"? If it is, it's easier to leave just an open choke, or you can backbore the gun to get a little improvement in pattern (if you need it at HD ranges). Removing and remounting the old choke is a pain. I use a local welding shop that understands firearms, don't have the equipment myself. Should run around $30 to remove and re- silver solder. It's hard to get the choke aligned straight, likewise the bead. Measure 3 times, lay it out again, measure twice more, start over, then cut once. We do a lot of "convert the old duck gun into a riot gun" jobs where I work, and I have a pile of old Poly Chokes and such. If you mean re-machining for the screw in chokes, I'd suggest a new barrel, probably much cheaper and easier.

Not worth the effort and expense unless you can do it yourself.
Keep that barrel for hunting (or sell it ) and get a new "riot" barrel
at Midway for $70

AS above. If you have quite a few shottys, or plan on doing several, it would be worth the $$ in tools to be able to thread & ream your barrels, but unless you're doing it for pride-of-ownership, it's a better value to just buy the shorter barrel. Brownells does sell the taps, though......

buy a new barrel, the prices are good. then you will have a better gun.

Yeah, what he said. Keep that barrel in one piece and buy a used barrel from ebay or gunbroker or other place. If you are gonna use it for home defense, just get an old one and whack it at 19". I have a "few" of them around the place, Just in case.

Ok, so far the consenus is, cut it and leave it cylinder bore. BUT, my question STILL is, how is the thing attached in the first place? Is it silver-soldered as Superhouse 15 posted, or is is it screwed on threads? The bead sight _is_ threaded through both choke and barrel, into the bore of the gun. So, is it soldered or threaded?

I have several pistols....45's, 9mm's, etc...
I have a BushMaster AR-15...

But for those coming through the 'door'...first or second in line...I have a Stoeger Coach Gun. I sent it out for a $200 'redo' for competive shooting...the baby is smooth!...

This double BBL 12GA will definitely be an attention grabber...then the .45.s will fly...
