S/A M1A Scout 18in barrel uses the same exact parts as a standard M1A
I don't believe the Socom does.

You, for some silly and unreasonable rationale are attempting to narrow a decision to one rifle. That's bad juju my brother. Plan on buying all of them and just decide which one first.

I try to have that theory with handguns. I shoot handguns alot more and I am just drawn to handguns more.

rifle choice

i know it is a little off topic but i am happy with the performance of my mini-30. it is reliable, very accurate with good ammo, & i just simply like the look of the rifle. flame on me if you want, but it is a reliable, well built rifle.

I have no practical use for any of these, so I went with the least practical choice; SOCOM

I've got a Springfield Armory M1A (M14 Type) Scout Squad, mahogany stock in 7.62X51 with 15 spare 20 round MilSpec mags by CMI. Mounts an Aimpoint 5000XD 2X scope.
Then as its little brother backup I've got a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle with Hogue stock in .223 with 15 spare 30 round mags by Promag. Mounts an Aimpoint 5000 scope.
Plus plenty of plentys of ammo in storage for each.
Once I got the M1A I just had to have the Mini 14 as well. They both go nice with all my other guns.

Voted for the 7.62x39.

Like Rob mentions, the SOCOM may still have some bugs to work out.

The 5.56 mags will always be harder [ less plentiful ] to find than AK 7.62x39 mags.

I would love to have a Socom, but I voted for the Vepr in 7.62x39.
This is a wellrounded usable rifle, save for the Socom and maybe a 5.56 later.

This has been floating awhile, so I'll stir the pot: I would not go with the SOCOM, unless you have $$ to burn, and want novelty, at this point. For the price of the better AKs, you can get a JLD PTR, in .308. Easily as accurate as any of the other choice (if not more so), cheap mags, available parts, US made, and retaining all the Whoopa** imparted by the .308.

Sarco still has them at a good price, I believe........

well.........

I'd get a AK.
You can still hunt....medium sized game at realistic hunting distances....since your hunts are rare(as are mine) a five round mag and 154 gr SP's should do most of what you need doing(unless you plan of baggin' moose or elk or some specialty critter).
The AK works. It has good penetration, ammo is cheap, and as mentioned you can buy three for the price of a Socom and EOTech. Not too mention the price of ammo and mags.
Plus it gives you a military classic with GLOBAL influence.
For any real world serious stuff....disasters, SHTF, Zombies, riots, civil war....I want an AK with me.
My opinion, for what its worth.
