M1 Garand

So I'm contemplating my next rifle purchase, and I've been pretty much dead-set on a Springfield Armory M1A. However, the M1 Garand is my next choice. I know the M1A (or other M14 clone) is a superiour weapon from a technical standpoint: Detachable box magazine, 7.62x51mm NATO chambering, lighter, and just all around better.

However, there's much to be said about the M1 Garand, its 8-round en-bloc clip, and .30-06 chambering. If I could find a Garand in good shape for under a grand, I might go with that instead of the M1A (at least for now). What do you guys think?

I have both....with the exception of the detachable mag...there really isn't that much difference. I actually prefer the balance of the Garand, the supply of good Garands is drying up fast, if you can find one JUMP.

If you meet the qualifications you can get one for well under a grand.

Right after I get my AR I'm headed this route

I was looking at several options...now that I have my BushMaster Ar-15 with an E.O. Tech Scope...I'll stop there for distance...

I am still looking for a Henry, or a Marlin in something 'heavy duty for a little closer...

That is the way to go! I got mine not too long ago. After talking to a friend, I went with the danish no wood and then ordered surplus wood stock from e-gunparts.com (all but 1 piece were original). Altogether I think I have less then $450 into it and it's looking great! I will be shooting it shortly. Oh yeah, I'm no gunsmith expert, but it looked as though the M1 that I got from CMP was in real good condition and barely used.

This is the end result:

All I'm issing is one metal piece which should arrive sometime next week.
