Military use also use their rifles in a different manner than a civilian. 100 yd+ are common, where anything past that is very rare in the civilian arena. If you are in a gun fight at those ranges as a civilian, you most likely will have some serious explaining to do.
Depends on what you are defending. My AR is my coyote gun. Out here we consider coyotes and mountain lions threats to our way of life that may need eliminated if they attack our herds.

I'll concede those of us that aren't so rural based wouldn't be shooting out that far.

Mostly ACOG in SOPMOD configuration, one person informed he used a Horus Vision scope....and that is the primary sight. I don't know if he is a designated rifleman. The "senior" Marines in my command are thrilled to finally have some optical system; in their case ACOGs.

Yes, I know military (infantry) v. civilian (non-LE) uses of scopes are different, but you didn't clarify civilan v. military in your post which is why I made my point.

Seriously, though: great purchase! Am looking at AR's now, myself.

I had a AR set up as a coyote gun, worked great. (yes, it was scoped) But I doubt the particular gun pictured is going to be a coyote gun.

I think it was safe to assume that we were talking about a civilian set up, due to the fact the questions were being asked here, and he is outfitting his own gun. Also, in all my time serving in the military and in L.E., I never had a firearm given to me by my agency as a Christmas gift. The gun pictured is most likely not going to used for a hunting application.
My point is that the gun should be outfitted for the task at hand, not for what goofy gun magazine has pictured. Your hard earned money could be spent better than on equipment you dont need and will most likely be a hinderance in a ugly situation.

I agree with you that a "gun should be outfitted for the task at hand," however, my first post was in response to your opening generic statement that scopes are worthless on "battle" rifles.

I'm not going to assume the purpose of which the thread starter is going to use his rifle; however you are probably right about not going to use his rifle for hunting...and I agree that a magnified optic would not be the best in a home defense situation that most private citizens would find themselves in. Irons (with perhaps a tritium front), followed with an EOTECH or possibly Aimpoint would work best. They would also work best in most LE situations, but then again my agency doesn't issue ARs and I'm not in the habit of engaging armed offenders at extended distances.

I have an Eotech on mine and plan on buying a low power scope as well. For general self defense purposes or SHTF I would use the Eotech, BUT at the range when I am paper target shooting (for the sake of killing paper, not "training"), I like the idea of having a low power scope to help my less than perfect eyesight. Generally I can shoot out to 100 yards accurately but if I want to go further just for fun, the Eotech is not much help. The ideal setup is pretty much dictated by the individual and how/what he is shooting at the moment. Nobody is ever always right. Especially for someone else....

I have an Aimpoint M3 (2 MOA) on my personal AR.

I think the biggest problem with these types of "CQB" sights is that many folks immediately purchase and mount them and neglect to "get to know" their iron sights.
