Finally, don't get a mini y comp brake. they are loud to the user, and twice as loud to bystanders.

I am seeing the issues a lot clearer in regards to the build it vs buy it built scenarios. Great info Sixto, Rocky, Hobbes, et.al. Much abliged. Just saw an AR that had a RRA forged lower with a LMT upper using a Wilson 16' barrel in an A2 set up complete. Any thoughts guys?

That would probably suit you fine- be aware though, I don't *think* the wilson bbls are chrome lined. Not completely sure though, you may want to check up on it if it's important to you.

No, the wilson barrels are not chromed lined...they are chrome moly.

All that means is you will need to take a little more care of the bore, its not a big deal unless your planning a vacation in Iraq.

As Rocky said, DO NOT GET A Y COMP! They punish everyone on the line, and it feels like your getting smacked in the nose every time you shoot. Stick with a bird cage or something close.

Roger that on the mini Y compensator. As more of the info comes in on this I don't think the chrome lined barrel is a deal killer one way or another. I clean and lube per manufacture's spec every time I get back from the range or a hunt so I think a chrome barrel is a bell and whistle issue, or so it seems from the intell coming in from y'all.

I've had non-chrome lined ARs before. As already said, it's nice to have but minimal maintenance will of course keep the bore shiny and like new. Bore snakes work great for this too.

I have shot several different ARs though only own a Bushy that my wife also shoots; not that I wouldn't purchase other brands. Colt, RRA, Bushmaster, Armalite, would top my list in that order.

We selected a chrome lined flutted barrel, A3 (removable handle) with a muzzle break, normal stock, and find it a very light and nicely balanced combo for under $900. RRA, Bushmaster, DPMS and Olympic were easily availble from my local GS.

I've read elsewhere that frankenARs, multiple source upper/lower etc.. often go FUBAR when run through an AR classes, so a very reputable builder is essential. Beware.

My recommendation for a first AR is to buy one complete or buy a complete lower from company A and complete upper from company B. Then learn about the gun and build your second one.

If you are going to build here is my advice:

Buy a stripped lower and two lower parts kits just in case.

Build the lower using AR15.com's guide.

Buy a completed upper assembly.

Learn how the upper works and is put together by swapping out parts as needed or tinkering. Easier to learn this way. Change out one piece at a time, if something fails, you know what changed and can remedy it quickly.

The upper is more complex than the lower, so that is why I recommend a lower build first over a complete build. That is the way I did it. I built my lower on a Bushy stripped, got a CMMG Inc upper assembly and slapped it on. I am acquiring upper parts here and there to build another upper for it. By doing it this way I have a complete upper assembled by professionals to look at to guide me if I get lost and can double check my work. I can see how something should look when parts fit together and then I just replicate it.

I am not mechanically inclined in the sense of auto or motorcycle mechanics, but I can put together guns pretty well without much trouble. I have built a number of bolt action rifles (including a takedown Mauser 98 switchbarrel in .338-06 and .376 Steyr). I am now trying my hand at AR rifles and 1911s.

Much obliged for all the great info and experiences. I am still looking for the one rifle or complete upper and lower that I see a a decent deal. I did see a complete RRA upper (wilson chromed barrel 16" M4) and a RRA complete lower with collapsible stock from the same company for about $735. This sounds pretty good and a little less risky than some of the "frankenguns" going around. Any thoughts on this?
