I agree with Blackeagle....that is why I lock up my magazine...an unloaded weapon is just a big stick.

Thanks for the input so far.

Just to focus back on the question however, do you think a trigger lock and nothing in the chamber, with shells in the gun is good enough?

I'm not comfortable with the closet thing. I'll lock it up completely before trying to hide it, or keep it "out of reach". I know how determined I could be as a kid to get at what I wanted, so i have no faith in height keeping it away from kids.

Thanks.

I think a trigger lock and unchamberd is fine.

Just a note my shotgun is unloaded but does have 5 rounds of 00 buck in a stock pouch.

You might be able to wall mount this vehicle lock

You could buy one of these locking shotgun cases.

or try searching the web for "Shotgun Receiver Lock" they are inexpensive but, I know nothing about them except that they exist.

An alternative to the trigger lock:

http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum2323.php

This will keep the action open and prevent a round from being chambered, and nothing needs to get stuck into the trigger guard. You can keep the pistol grip if you so desire.

There's also the V-Line long-gun case:

I was thinking of mounting one of those shotgun holders like the cops have in their cars. I have seen the ones that have a switch that opens a lock that secures the gun. The idea is to build a shroud to cover the trigger guard and mount the switch in a secret location.

I can't remember the brand, but they can be bought on ebay......

like this one.

I too have a 3 1/2 year old (boy), so I keep my HD guns secured. My primary HD gun is my Benelli M1S90 which I keep under the bed in a V-Line vault:

http://www.kcsafe.com/items/gun-safe...242-detail.htm

The mechanical 5 button simplex lock is quick and the vault keeps the gun secure and out of sight. An added benefit is my gun dusting is greatly reduced. I also have one of their "Top Draw" models for my HD pistol.

Google Lifejacket Gunlocks.

I do not like triggerlocks. I have dry-fired my mossberg 590 with one installed. Also with my G17. And one of my 1911s. It did take effort, but it still fired.

Its not a problem if the cross-bar for the lock will fit behind the trigger, but on just about all single-action firearms, it wont fit behind the trigger.

I'm sure we're all familiar with rule #3. Now, with a trigger lock, you're not only putting something in the tiggergaurd, but something that will fire the weapon with a sharp blow to the device you've locked into place. There shouldn't be anything in your triggergaurd unless its your finger and you intend on firing. JMNSHO.
