I'm Nervous
Ok, call me a Whimp..go ahead, I can take it.
Last time I shot a 12 Guage, it rocked my world. It was not fun. I shot a Mossy 500 and maybe I just wasn't holding it tight enough. Well, I just borrowed my friends Huglu over and under from China. I'm going to try to get over this fear. Any suggestions? |

Wear a recoil pad. Buy light, #8 or similar target loads. get a proper stance and hold the gun tight. wear a heavy shirt or jacket.
The problem you have now is you are afraid of the recoil, so it will Seem much worse than it is. Shoot a heavy 12 Gauge, light guns recoil more.

First, make sure you are holding the gun properly, i.e. proper cheek weld, etc. Try getting some of the reduced loads ammo and maybe a shoulder pad.
The first few times I shot my 870, I was less than thrilled. Then I got a little help with my grip. It seems that I was not getting the gun stable enough on my shoulder with my cheak welded to the stock. That helped a lot. Then I used a shoulder pad and reduced loads and that also helped. If I am going to shoot more than 10 rounds, I generally still use a pad (OK, I'm a wimp, so sue me!). Firing the 870 is now a lot of fun. The kick doesn't bother me like it did at first. It seems that Rocky was posting the same time as I was.
I should have just waited and said, "what he said". ![]() |

alot depends on perception of recoil. I occasionally incorrectly mount the old 12 ga. Browning while hunting. Never notice till the arm turns black & blue.
The heavier the load (buckshot, slugs) the harder the recoil.

pull it tight into your shoulder (make it solid) and lean into it.

Thanks everyone....
I just bought some Remington 8 shot game loads. Man, I wish my 9mm HP's were this cheap. I'll let you know what happens. |

Shoot some black powder .50 ball ammo first. The 12 ga. will feel like a 9mm afterward.

+1 lean into it. Makes a world of difference.. Squeeze tight to the shoulder, but not so tight it hurts..

Shoot at something worthwhile, if not game, some clays or something. Focusing on hitting a moving target will help take your focus off the recoil.
My buddy was just here for the end of waterfowl season and we were shooting 12ga, 3 1/2" BB. The first goose my buddy dropped, he said, "wow, I didn't even notice the recoil." I had a similar experience with Ruger No. 1 in .375 H&H. At the range, it was nothing short of punishing (still lots of fun though). When I shot a deer with it, I didn't even feel it. Yes, I know, a TX whitetail with a .375 H&H! But you know what, it didn't run a step after I shot it. What can I say, I like 'em big and loud. Most important, just go do it. Shooting is fun and the longer you worry about it the worse it will be. Dave. |
