I have a pair of dogs in that sleep in the house so his attention should be focused on them until I arrive. I don't want to draw attention to me and I don't want to "short-stroke" the action in the excitement and start the conflict out with a jam.

I can see, in a one bedroom, that you would be looking for all the advantage that you can get and the shock factor is high in a quiet room when the slide racks.

I will take any tactical advantage I can get. If the perp thinks I am unarmed, that is what I would consider a tactical advantage. It is not worth the gamble to me that racking the slide just might scare away the BG. Things don't always work out like they do in the movies.

Heres what I do with my 870... load up the tube with the flavor of the day... I keep slugs in the saddle, in case I cant get the job done with shot. Check to make sure chamber is empty. Check it again. Crack open the bolt just enough to stick my finger in the chamber, nope, no shell.
Take finger out, close chamber. Pull the trigger on the empty chamber. Gun is now ready.

But do you guys release the trigger? This is an important step if you keep the chamber empty.

Yes, I dry fire.

So I don't have to worry about the slide release when things go bump in the night

With my Mossberg Persuader. 7 rounds of 00 buck in the tube, with 2 more buck and 3 slugs on the butt stock. And I also load a snap cap instead of an empty chamber, but I check, re-check, and triple check, before pulling the trigger on it, then put on the safety.

With the coachgun I load up 00 buck in both barrels and leave the safety on, but I obviously don't pull the trigger. There is usually also a bandolier with an assortment of 00, slugs, and smaller shot lying around for either shotgun too.

Good, that would be bad if you go through all the trouble of keeping it ready, only to fumble with the release and get yourself hurt.

Pickup a used Mossberg 500 or new/used Maverick 88 and put a elastic shell holder on the but.
