Same here, since it will only take 4 in the tube.
Loaded with #1 Buck Winchester Super X.

#4 Buckshot has always been my preference.
My old Dept. used it with good results.

My Mossy is loaded with "00" but...after attending a class on "Crime Scene Analysis" for the last 2 days, I'm thinking BIRDSHOT will even do the trick! I saw some really gross pics of some guys that were shot with various shotguns, and MOST of them were shot with birdshot. Only ONE guy was shot with "00 Buck" 2 were hit with #4 and the rest were all #8 quail loads. They were ALL equally and EXTREMELY messy!

The instructor's comment was, and I quote..."Out of a shotgun, an ounce of lead is an ounce of lead!"

I agree!

A loaded magazine, empty chamber, trigger dry-fired to "free" the slide, safety off - as many have already described it here already - is in the condition the cops call CRUISER READY. It's the way most departments want their issue shotguns carried. There can be no accidental discharge cause you've got to work the action to load a round, yet it's VERY fast to get into action.

It was Massad Ayoob who first suggested that, rather than scare a BG, racking the slide MIGHT suggest to a hardened perp that "This guy is so stupid that it's only just occurred to him that he needs to load his gun! I can take him if I have to!"

As for the bird shot, yes, at room distances it really doesn't matter what size shot you use - AS LONG AS NOTHING ELSE GETS IN THE WAY.

If the BG manages to duck behind your heavily stuffed sofa and use it for cover, you'll play hell trying to reach him through it with light bird shot.

So clearly, YMMV depending on your individual tactical situation. Me, I just stick to double ought.

Maverick 88 on a gun rack just above the closet door near the bed. 5 in the tube, safety on. Federal 00 aught. Rackin one in makes the intruder think "oh s#@" exit left.

No problems with under-penetration? I have not heard good things about #4 BUCK.

No problems while I was with them. The only time I knew of any type of "under penetration" was 1 Officer that shot a subject at an extended distance (too far for any kind of shot to work effectively). The subject was hit with only 1 pellet that didn't even break the skin.
If the Officer would have had the right tool for the job, in this case the Dept. issue Mini 14, the BG would have been DRT. When the subject was apprehended he had a welt from the (1) pellet.

Truthfully my opinion of a shotgun is about the same as a handgun, both are poor substitutes for a rifle. That being said I prefer shotguns be used a reasonable CM distant. If 20 pellets of #4 buckshot doesn't do the job, then the shotgun probably isn't the right tool for the job at hand. Btw I don't have a problem with OO Buckshot either, it just wasn't the authorized load for the shotgun at the time I worked there. But I do feel #4 Buckshot is a viable load for most self defense situations.

Stay Safe

Mossberg Persuader, 7 rounds 00 buck in mag, 5 more on stock.

I think that'll do.

Mossberg w/ one in the chamber, +5 in the tube. I view shotgun readiness just I as do pistol readiness. My 1911's are kept in condition 1. There's no tactical advantage to having a weapon that's not ready to use. If it's ever needed, it needs to be ready NOW. I don't put any stock in the concept of the sound of a pump shotgun causing BGs to flee in terror. If I want to terrorize them, I'll call out in a commanding tone: "Begone evil-doers! The buckshot of doom approaches!"
