Got an AR (Pics)
Well, after many years of obsessing and yearning for one - I got an AR-15. I saved my pennies and dimes and twenty dollar bills, and here she is:
![]() Bushmaster M4 Type 16" with 5.5" Flash Suppressor and chrome lined barrel. I picked it up from Prescott Valley Guns today for $950. ![]() It has the detachable carry handle. I think my first order of business is going to be a scout scope, but I haven't decided. Anyone have any suggestions for upgrades or things to avoid?

Congrats!!!
Get more High Capacity mags first. A dozen of them. Or a half dozen. Might get hard to get later. The other stuff can wait. You might also want to pick up a 10 round mag for bench shooting work to sight in or target practice. But have fun. They are fun to shoot.

I am a less is more sorta guy , but from what i can see is first off detail strip it and make shure your bolt carrier is prpoerly staked , as well as the castle nut on the buffer tube . Second is go to some forums that more or less specialise in the ar platform and search the term " buis " this is nothing more or less than back up iron sights , they come everything from what is on the carry handle to some real specialty flip up sights. With the thought in mind that if the optics you will eventualy put on it in lew of the carry handle goes down , then this will be your sights . Now you can get into a lot of trivia on buis , such as " cowitness" ( where your dot or crosshair will set on top of the front sight when you have proper cheek weld ) and lower 1/3 cowitness ( where it doesnt , but the sights are avalable in the lower 1/3 of the normal sight picture ) ect.. Pay no mind to any of it to start with . Any scope over 4x and the front sight tower literaly cannot be seen . I ordered a cheap chicom a2 buis from http://www.copesdist.com/ar15.htm ( has not arrived yet , in fact shipped today due to weather or so they tell me) , and 30 bucks vs over 100 for something i will set once and forget lol . My point is pick up a bunch of 20 and 30 round mags , and a case or two of ammo , once you shoot up a couple of cases of ammo , then look at the toys like high end batterysights , free float boltonguards , single /double /triple/quad point ( whateaver is this weeks flavor of high drag low speed crap ) slings, ect . If you want it for a serious rifle well then KISS if its a toy then bolt anything on it that you can find . If its both , then only put the toy parts on as qd , and leave the serious parts on all the time . Above all have fun with it and shoot it lots.

Yeah. I wanted it for both a serious rifle and a fun plinker. I wanted to find something I could use with the iron sights on the carry handle. Not really happening right now. I think that is excellent advice, though, Redneck. I'm prolly gonna put 1000 rounds through it before I decide if I need to go with the high-speed low drag stuff.
However, I will be investing in a Harris Bi-Pod because I do a lat of dirt shooting.

Before you buy a bipod, make yourself some shooting sticks... I find them much more useful than the harris. I took my bipod off my PSS once I learned to use the sticks at a well known sharpshooter school in Virginia.

There is an adaptor out there ( i dont remember where i saw it ) that will put a qd sling adaptor on a standard hand guard. That is imho what would work best for a harris with your current config . Do watch bipoding it tho , on the ar platform if the upper isnt absolutly perfect , or even if it is with a light weight barrell and standard handguards , it can string verticly . It honestly not an issue for an average 100 yrd shooter , but if your reaching out 400 and over for prarie dogs ect.. it can have a big effect .. in that case a new front end with free float handguards is in order for you .
