Smile Braggin' on Ruger Mini 14

Recently bought a used Mini 14 from local Sheriff's Dept. After testing it at the range and finding that it couldn't hit a 5 gal. paint can at 100 yds. decided to try to improve its performance. Long story short, after spending enough money to buy a new AR (trigger work, composite stock, bolt face reworked, Shilen heavy barrel, and some other things) I am proud to announce it may not be the most accurate rife around, but it is the most accurate Mini 14. It seems to me that M.O.A. is an overworked term, your bullets might group nicely but if you can't hit a 1" dot every time your gun is not doing its job. To test the rifle I teed up 5 golf balls at 150 yds, and proceeded to blow them up one shot after another. To be honest it was using a bi-pod. Almost all loads shot well, but I was surprised that the best load was IMI 62 gr. FMJBTSC/WC using Varget powder and scrounged Winchester white box brass. Lee factory crimp die did away with the trimming. Second best load was H335 and 55gr. V-Max. Like I said , I could have bought a good AR type rifle with the money I spent, but as of now I wouldn't part with the Mini for any other semi-auto. Plus, it never jams and you only need clean the barrel from time to time. dgang " I shoot therefore I am "

I had one that did the same. Instead of putting a lot of money into it, I traded it. Steve48

I know my mini 14 is not a tack-driver and yet, I love that rifle. I may send it to Accuracy Systems Inc at some point. For now, I just have a lot of fun with it. Mine has been 100% reliable round after round.

Golf balls(1.682") at 150yds. ??? The MINI's that I have owned wouldn't do that at 15yds from bench and bag.

Had a buddy that had a Chief AJ tuned(Hart bbl, etc.) that would come close to that.

You know that MINI will be one weapon that you can never sell don't ya ? I have some of those sittin' in my safe right now.

I'd like to see a pic of the gun. I loved my old mini 14. I don't know if I got lucky or what but mine was accurate out of the box. I hit anything I aimed at. Inch groups at 100.

It's meant to be a 3 shot Ranch rifle. I have yet to see a Mini 14 shoot worse than 2MOA with a 3 shot string. Most will shoot MOA when matching the barrel twist to the bullet weight.
