Sweet looking rifle!

I probably shouldn't even comment on this thread since my talent to do something like this is nonexistant.

I do well to just shoot my AK.

My hat is off to you guys who are talented enough to produce something like this.

Beautiful! I haven't heard of Duplicolor- is that an engine/auto paint? I've used Brownell's Teflon/moly, DuraCoat, and a combo of Rustoleum industrial over their Hi-Temp. Teflon/Moly is my favorite, but since I rarely do more than 1 gun every 2 years, its not terribly cost effective.

Well done! And excellent photos. I've considered getting an AK for quite a while. Maybe the kit route would be the way to go. I'm pretty well set up with ARs now, plus the SKS and the Uzi, so it's about time I added an AK to the arsenal.

Nice work!

Thanks Rob (and everyone)! yeah duplicolor is just an engine/header paint...they have two different versions 500* and 1200*...I just happened to have the 500* around so that's what I used. Can be had at wallyworld for not very much $ at all...doesn't compare to norrell's moly resin, gun kote, etc but it's a fairly good option for an AK if you ask me...what the heck...if it gets banged up you can just spray another coat on and bake it.

For those asking where to get the kits there are a bunch of places that people seem to like (I've never dealt with any of these places though so I can't comment on them...I'm only going by what I've heard other people say):

www.copesdist.com has a few different kits (Romy kits are $115 here $120 for guaranteed matching #s)

www.dpharms.com has some for a bit more with g2 fire control groups

www.militarygunsupply.com has some as well

If anyone is interested in it then just drop me a line and I'll point you in the right direction to some good directions and give you a list of websites that will make your build easier.

Are there any BATF regs that you have to follow? Obviously, no select fire but I thought I saw something about matching numbers. Can you explain this because I may have found a new hobby.....

Looks pretty cool to me!

For those that want an even easier build, you can pick up a Saiga rifle and add the required domestic parts and you have your self a Hybrid Russian/USA AKM...

Yep, there are the usual NFA rules regarding Full auto, barrel length, etc.
Then the biggest set of rules to keep in mind is Sec. 922(r) which says, basically, that you can't have more than 10 non-US made parts in a "non-sporting" rifles. So this means that most people will replace a few parts....in the typical stamped AK you will need 6 US made parts
Receiver counts as one part
Fire control group counts as 3 parts
so that leaves 2 more parts to be replace
most popular (due to cost and/or ease) are: muzzle device, stock, grip, forearm, gas piston.

This build I went with cost in mind so my count is:
Receiver, FCG, break, pistol grip

For someone who wants to do a more authentic looking build and keep the original pistol grip they can swap out the gas piston and keep the grip.

If you are building yor AK into a pistol then parts count doesn't matter and you can use 100% original parts
