Talking Built My First AK!

Here she is...

Still have a bit to learn about setting rivets correctly but I'm hoping that I'll be able to take what I learned on this kit and apply it to my other kits from other countries.

Build info:
-Typical Romanian G kit in great condition. Never fired by the looks of the gas piston. All matching numbers blah blah blah...
-Receiver was an NDS-3 that I modified for a double hook G2 trigger.
-Stock was refinished in Minwax Red Mahogany and Formby's High Gloss Tung Oil

Overall I'm pretty happy with it...except for the learning curve on creating a nice rivet head on those darn long rear trunion rivets

Best $200 and few hours of labor I've spent in quite a while!! What a blast!

That is one GORGEOUS AK Sir!

What metal finish did you use if any?

Thanks!
HAAAA well yes it is sort of "finished" if you can call it that

cleaned up all the metal, cleaned again, cleaned one more time and shot three light coats of....... DupliColor with Ceramic 500* semi and baked it at 315* for an hour (after preheating with a heatgun).

I actually tested a few different non-gun high temperature rated paints that I have around here with mixed results...for example, VHT motorcycle engine case paint was very resistant to solvents (even acetone) after curing, but it wasn't as scratch resistant as I would have liked. In the end I settled on the DupliColor because it had the best compromise/combo of scratch resistance and solvent resistance. My idea with the build was to do a dirt cheap build (hence the paint and not an actual finish) and have it look halfway decent. Besides, it's an AK so paint is somewhat fitting.

Nicely done! Was it a difficult build?

It was my first build, I'm far from an expert...actually it's my first AK of any type (though I do have more kits in the works)...
anyway, it was very easy...I would have done it long ago if I had known that it would be that easy actually. I remember looking at a set of instructions on making an AK quite a while ago and thinking that it looked complicated but after finding some nice newer tutorials online I thought I'd give it a shot. I found that it was much easier than I had thought.

not including the wood refinishing and/or painting the build was start to finish done in one day with a lot of breaks and distractions that pulled me away from the build process...

Looks like a great result - nice pics too (I separated those a bit to display better).

What was your source for the kit?

Very nice!

Glad to see you went with that receiver. I never did like the "non dimpled" receivers used on the WASR's.
