A question about a Savage .223

So my father has expressed interest in these guns, he has a buddy who has one and they have been at the range a lot lately and he really likes it. The bottom line is that I want to get him one for fathers day, but don't want to ask him too much about it or else he will know whats up, and I also have no way of contacting his friend. The gun would be just a regular range rifle for him, so I was wondering if you guys had any input about favorable models for me, thanks in advance.

I guess this would be the 110 ..... and as I see it these days, the Savage with 'Acu-trigger' is one good amount of gun for not too much money.

I have a late 99c in 243 and even without the Acu-trigger it is a lovely rifle. Not sure of current prices but the 100 is what I am thinking for model. What a great present

The accu trigger seems to be a nice addition to an already good rifle. (the 110)

If it doesn't have to be "pretty" and light, I would go with the 110FP. I have an older one in .308 and it is just insanely accurate. With the new trigger system (since I got mine) they address the only thing I can think of that anyone would call a "short coming"

The 110. Outstanding gun for the money. Actually, outstanding, period.

I've got a Savage 12FLV (lefty), in .223, 26" heavy bbl, synth stock, under $500. Models with bolts on the wrong side (uh, the non-left side!) are also available. They're very accurate, generally, right out of the box.

Saw an 11 the other day in .243 for ~$450, NIB.

Used, the 10 and 11 series rifles can be found for < $300, though the 12's tend to be a bit more.
