Id say a Grizz would fall just fine to a 45/70 depending on ammo bufflo bore would for sure get it done

ammo is one par with most rifles 22-30$ a box

the more wild round ala bufflo bore 30-60 a box

buffalo bore?whats that?

and a grizzly, seriously? you would feel confident with a lever 45-70 against one, im not being sarcastic just trying to be educated with the wealth of knowledge on this site, i thank you all for your help, and schooling a soldier and Im more used to the more modern rounds,308,338,30-06,7.62x39 and .223 where does it rank among the calibers such as these?

A source (manufacturer) for strong loads in 45-70, among others!

Forget .223, and 7.62x39 . and note my figures above comparing .308 with a hot 45-70 load . it is truly a Buffalo gun potentially and no grizz would stand too much chance!!!

This is in the realms of (relatively) slow and heavy - but tremendous energy .. haven't checked figures but will possibly exceed a 7mm mag type round in energy ...... maybe up nearer 375 H&H.

Now that .338 Lapua is a good round for med/lg game as well but I don't think as common a caliber.

I have a marlin 1895 in 45/70. The marlin is very strong, but a little short of the ruger no.1 but there are a wide variety of loads for the marlin, as people said. the cowboy type loads are very mild - 1600 ft-lbs. you can easily get up to 2200 or so in factory 300 grain loads. buffalo bore makes some much more powerful loads- energy similar to 30-.06 but remember- energy calculations understate the effectiveness of big, heavy bullets! all north american game can be taken with a marlin in 45/70. then there is the "leverevolution" or whatever loads by hornady i believe. they have pointed bullets! they do that by using a special polymer tip. the result is the marlins now shoot well to almost 200 yds!
the 1895 is a wonderful rifle. very accurate for its type, drilled for scope mounts (heresy!). good luck!
God Bless

FWIW, Gunsite does action and performance jobs on Marilin 45/70 rifles. I got to shoot one during my Advanced Tactics class. The class was a handgun course, but there were only three of us so we got to do some extra stuff and shooting the Marilin 45/70 was a real treat for me. I thought the Gunsite action work was amazing.

I'd have an M1A and a Marlin 45/70 if I could figure out why I need them.

They've got a used stainless one at a shot close by that I drooled over for a while. I was looking for a short level action that I could strap on my 4-wheeler when I ride at home.

Many guides in Alaska carry the marlin guide guns in 45-70 for grizzly self defense.
