308,338,30-06,7.62x39 and .223 where does it rank among the calibers such as these?
Let me quote myself again from earlier

Quote:
Well - with about 52 grains of RL7 behind a 405 - a vel of about 1900 is possible so - that's about an ME of 3200 ft lbs - not shabby! That tho only useable in a tough gun like Ruger #1.

By comparison a std .308 throwing a 150 grainer gives about 2400 ft lbs .. so you can see the potential in the round is considerable.
A hot 45-70 beats a .308 easily.!! It will not however have the flat ballistics like .308 so not so useful for real long range. I'd personally use a hot 45-70 out to 200 but not much further.

Im sold on the marlin, and the 45-70 round!!!!

I'm throughly impressed by the marlin and held my first marlin lever action today i like the feel very much so and I think I'm going to go ahead and buy on now they, i am really impressed with them, some questions though, is getting a scope on one a difficult process, i think some on said getting them tapped and drilled IIRC, and finishes i know some may not like this but i thought i saw one of the pictures of a lever action with black synthetic furniture and stainless steel barrel , i like that look, I'm kinda new school about acessories but love the classic design a little old school meets new school, not trying to be tacicool or anything thanks for you help so far everybody and how much would a new one go for in marlin?

scopes are pretty easy. On the Guide Gun it already has tapped holes for scope mounts--OR-- you can get a scout mounting for it.

Yes.
The .45/70 Government has taken the African Big Six, elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, cape buffalo, lion and leopard.
