I know its been mentioned before but you really should look into an M1A/M14. If you are not married to the AR platform you just cannot go wrong here. Plenty of parts/add ons, tried and tested platform that will be much more accurate than the AR.
FYI I use an AR (RRA CAR A2) for a carbine and a M1A Loaded as my long gun.... |

Plus with the M14 you can now get AR style stocks and foreguards with rails for all of the toys.
Was talking to some knowledgeable guys and one of them mentioned that the problem with the AR-10 was that the gas block was not keyed to the barrel, so if it got whacked hard the block would rotate cutting off the gas port. This is the first time I heard this. It was 20 years ago that I got to shoot an AR-10, it was the only AR I ever liked. |

Some hand guards cover the gas block. My hand guard dose, and the front sight that sits on top of it would most likely give before the gas block moves. Or so I hope.

The only information I have on .308 AR's is that I have a deputy friend who has been waiting for a Rock River .308 for over a year. He finally called them and they told him that they have been having problems with cracked receivers on the .308 platform and have yet to fix the problem. This is as of 3 weeks ago.
So he is now looking at the Armalite or the DPMS. Just what I have heard. I also hear that the DPMS is a great weapon. I have a Century L1A1 and for what it is, it's a little tack driver with iron sights out to 300 yards... I haven't had opportunity to go out farther than that. I am presently looking at the Springfield SOCOM 16 or the Scout/Squad. For a long time I was leaning towards the SOCOM 16 but everyone is saying go for the 18 inch barrel of the Scout/Squad. Not to hijack Gary's thread, but if any suggestions on that, shout em out. I'm now leaning towards the Scout/Squad. BTW... I like the AR platform too... I would go with DPMS for a .308!

Bark'n,
Those SOCOMs are sweet little rifles, although probably the heaviest rifle around for its size/length. I've wanted one for a while. The few I've handled/shot didn't have any of those cycling problems I'd read about online. A lot of folks are waiting on RRA's 308 offering. B. |

If you look around, you can get DPMS .308 mags for $30-$35. They're still higher than FAL mags, but not by much given how much FAL mags have gone up recently. |

Maybe i will look into a dpms then ..
ya know you need at least 100 mags if the shtf.. So now anyone who has a 308 how is reloading for it in the AR? i know cetme tears up the brass and if you use real 308 ammo they tend to stick so i only use surplus in it but i can reload cheaper |
