I liked the program.

The woman interviewed presented herself well. The media showed both sides of the arguments (hers and other gun owners and the concerns by the... well, less educated). They brought attention to the fact that more and more people are purchasing good ol' Stoner's black rifle, and that they are being purchased for legitimate causes. I'd have liked to hear them clarify the use of the DC-sniper's weapon, but this was hardly anti-gun tripe.

I'd rate it above average, compared to their usual stories. We gun-owners give the media such a hard time about screwing up facts that we ought to give at least a little credit when our side is presented fairly (as it was in this program).

+1...or perhaps, at least, deliberately chosen ignorance. If they confronted the facts, logic would compel them either to change their position or admit to themselves that they are irrational nitwits. So they remain ignorant by design.

What I found interesting was that the owner of Stag Arms started his company to "cash in" on the recent boom in sales as a result of the assault weapons ban going away. Has Stag Arms not been in business for years? Isn't a big part of their business law enforcement?

My favorite line…”critics claim that certain features of these rifles make them especially dangerous in the wrong hands. A pistol grip that allows firing from the hip...”

I never knew that un-aimed firing from the hip was more dangerous than aimed fire from the shoulder.
JT,
But of course its alot more dangerous, I'm assuming you served in the military so I just wanted to tell you they forgot to tell you about this technique.

A few years ago, I was involved in a coffee shop "debate" about assault rifles. This one older gentleman was going on about how he thought it was fine and dandy for people to have hunting rifles, but these "little black rifles" had no business outside law enforcement and military.
I turned the discussion to home defense and got him to admit that if his and/or his family was under attack it would be in his best interest to have a large number of rounds "available".
I invited him out to my home and retrieved a Mini-14 from my gun cabinet and asked him if he thought it was OK to have that for home defense. He said sure, but it wasn't one of those guns designed to just kill people.
I excused myself, and retrieved my AR-15 and asked if that was one of the guns he objected to. He said of course it was! He was quite shocked when I demonstrated that both rifles used the same round and that round would kill people no matter if it was fired from a gun with black plastic or wood surrounding the barrel.
I then did the same demo with an AK and a Mini-30.
He finally saw the light and admitted that if he was in a situation that called for self defense, he would want the larger capacity mags, and that it was not the guns that were killers, it was how they are used by people.

I never did get how a pistol grip makes it easier to fire from the hip. I've shot with both types of stocks. For me, a pistol grip is easier to fire from the shoulder and traditional stocks are easier from the hip. The wrist angle just isn't right otherwise.

Honestly, with the in-line bolt-barrel-stock design of the AR, I don't see how you could do it without a pistol grip.

Hey, if I paint my Marlin 1895 black or my Ruger M77, does that them "black rifles"? Or my Mosins?

I could put a pistol grip on one of my double guns, too and paint it black as well...

CorpsVet - that is it exactly!!!

I like your comparison between Mini and AR - sorta brings a point home nicely

One thing I forgot to mention, when I was comparing the mini's to the assault rifles I carefully pointed out that they all had the same rate of fire (more or less), that being one shot per trigger pull. So that one is no more "dangerous" than the other.
