TI , I agree that the Wingmaster might be your best choice, especially if you're dead-set against any Express consideration. My Wingmaster (with 18" barrel) was my HD shotgun for several years. My problem was that the Wingmaster was also my favorite bird gun. So, come bird season, I had to change barrels, install the plug, and was without my bedside HD for the duration.( Yea, I could have reversed the whole process, but it also provided a good excuse for another gun). Tired of the hassle, I selected the 870 Express Magnum with 18" barrel, eight shot with plastic furniture (hate all plastic!). HD shotguns probably get shot less than any other shotgun, so the major differences between the Express and Wingmaster were of little concern to me. When I patterned the Express, I was surprised at the pattern - it was a very narrow, yet tall pattern. It sure ain't pretty to look at, but is is 870dependable, and my Wingmaster is ready to go !
Have you considered a pawn shop Wingmaster ? You can get the 18" barrel off the internet for around $100.

Due respect to all, my new (the other one I finally retired) 870 Marine P is about the best thing I've purchased in the last decade. WOW. My two cents (now worth diddly, with inflation).

Geezer,

I am looking at all my options. I just found a site for the police wingmaster turn in's that are in great condition, I may look closer at them. Team posted a link on another 870P but I think I have to call because when I tried to select it to my cart the price came to $0.00 so no check out possible. I wouldn't mind paying nothing for it but that might be telling me they are out of them, there was only two left.

I have 3-4 Wingmasters but I am not willing to change them up nor put them through the abuse I am about to put one through. I will be training/practicing quite a bit with the one I choose so I am wanting the better quality line for a HD/Training shotty.

I don't care about the tactical look. Straight wood stock and fore arm, maybe a mag tube and rifle sites and I will be happy. We have a Cabelas here and they have a pretty huge selection of shotgun's that I am going to look at tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

Do you have a link for the 18" Wingmaster bbl?

Marine P? Never heard of it. You talking about the Marine Magnum? If so, that is from the SPS line which is a good choice but no Wingmaster or actual Police 870 quality. The finish and accessories are what make it and why Remington call's it an SPS (Special Purpose) and not an Express. I talked to Remington about the MM and they all but admitted that it was an Express with the good's and finish.

TI - I don't have a link for the Rem 870 barrel. I have seen them on ebay, auction arms or gunbroker. I bought mine at a local gun show several years ago, it's just a plain barrel with a bead sight. Just for kicks, this fall I plan to take the 18 with me to Kansas Phesant hunting. That should stop them buggers from jumping up in my face !

Whatever. I'm not sure the 'P' distinction is included in the retail catalogs, so cut me some slack there. Our company has got so many different letter distinctions for products that we make, it isn't hard to make the leap that perhaps for Remington it is just a vendor referral number in the catalog or something. We're talking about the same gun. Stainless finish and hardware are, indeed, perhaps, the nicest parts of this gun. It performs just like the old one, but seems heavier. However, since it is with me on motorcycle AND horseback, that isn't really an issue.

All apologies, this shotgun is NOT pampered so the finish was worth every penny.

When your talking apples and apples it makes a diference at least to me. If your were telling me that there really is a Marine Magnum P available then I'd have been all over it as soon as I could have gotten my shoes on, out the door and to the gun shop.

If you would have read the first post, I expressed I didn't want an express line or one with a fancy finish and they (Remington) call it "special purpose". IMO it's a $250.00 shotgun with a $350.00 finish and a couple of add on's.

Good gun, just not what I want internally in a shotgun.

What company you with?

Awwright

OK, Ti...here's the scoop...

The Mag Combo Tactical Model P is the specific listing with Remington. I ordered it directly in February, using my Numerich catalog. Perhaps they've dropped the 'P' distinction since, but that is what is listed as then. Call Numerich and them about the 870 Marine P Magnum and this is what you get. Not sure that helps at all...

I went ahead and had our engineer call Remington, just so we're 'apples to apples'. This gun is listed EXACTLY as above. The 'Marine' in their description refers to the stainless satin finish.
This is the model recommended by DCJS instructor Tom Perroni. If it is good enough for Tom to teach classes with at Blackwater, it is good enough for li'l old me.

If you're looking for a duty-made 'combat' shotgun, this particular 870 is the way to go (unless you're able to drop the $1700 on a Benelli M4). I guess the way I look at it, the manufacturing in this gun is superior to any Mossberg 590 I've ever owned, and the extra $130 is money well spent.

I DID read the original post, incidentally. The topic has wandered a bit, but relevance is still there, especially since you mentioned an 870P specifically. As far as what you're looking for internally, I don't know what to tell you. If you don't consider rust-free a desirable trait, go buy a $200 Maverick every three years if that's your preference. I quit using non-finished shotguns because moisture limited the useful life of the gun. Again, I'm carrying this on a bike in the rain and on the farm on horseback. I can't always get somewhere to clean and oil it in a timely manner. This will never pit or rust, and I respectfully submit that there is a reason this model was recommened.

Just an opinion.
