I have an M1A and I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
I would go with the full length barrel and then an after-market stock. I plan this for my next rifle because the full-length is too long to store or transport in my trunk easily. I may go for the SOCOM for the shorter barrel length, but reaching out there is the way to go in my opinion. I didn't notice, might have missed, but there is also the AR10 option. AR15 platform chambered for .308. Makes it American made and all interchangable parts with the AR guns.

I have to vote for the FN it's not that expensive and they come in many flavors. This is my Izzy and my twin G1's The gas system is a dream, if you buy or reload large lots of ammo you can tune the gun to a more tame setting.

External accessories (rails, stocks, sighting systems, etc) would be interchangable though. |

PTR 91 is the way to go! I have the PTR91 KPF and I love it! I'm just looking for a good scope now.
Keep this in mind though------>the .308 is an excellent cartridge, BUT have you seen ammo prices lately? Especially .308!!!! They ain't cheap! |

Here's an update on what I found
DS Arms makes a good FAL with cheap mags but its almost $2000
Red jacket makes a galil copy that uses galil mags for $1289 Tromix has a Saiga conversion but uses weird mags that are currenyl out of supply Springfields M1As and Fulton Armory both have nice rifles in the scout configuration but I would have to throw another $500 to get a collasible stock. Pricey but good triggers, but heavy also but boy I love this gun. PTR makes several models I like with folding stock or collaspible, made onthe HK action. I fell in love with the HK years ago and had a chance to buy one when they were cheap but being young and married made it hard. Only draw back to the PTRs I see are the weight and 11 pound trigger pull. Vector makes a 308 on the old HK MP5 set up. No folding stock but for $250 more can get one. Armalite and Fulton make an AR-framed 308. They seem to be on the high end of the price and mag prices seem to be high. DPMS and Rock River make a 308 on the AR frame. Their prices are close, with Rock River being the cheapest and ROck River uses FAL mags which is also cheaper. Decisions, Decisions.....more research to go. |

New Kel-tec in 2008
Kel-tec is going to put out a 308 bullpup that has ambi controls and ejects brass out the front like the FN2000s. I thnk I might wait for that.
Check out kel-tec's website and look at the teaser video, looks neat.
