"parkerized" vs blued shotgun

I have narrowed down the search for a hd gun Honestly it will not go into the field at all ( unless shtf and I have to evac then all bets are off only semi tongue in cheek).

I want a mossberg 590 I would love the marine coat or new process marine coat but don't want to spend the money. A parkerized vs with a heat shield goes for around 417 with tax etc vs 375 for a blued finish. I am guessing that the parkerized finish is the more durable finish short of the stainless marine version. What are the cons of a parkerized finish vs a blued gun?

Blued isn't as tough, but is prettier. Parkerized is ugly, but tougher. Thats the way I see it.

aus has it right - much as I love blued, in particular early Smith blue - Park'd stuff is rugged as all get out and so very hard to damage.

I'd say it was worth the extra.

A good blue job can't be beat, but no one is really doing a GOOD blue job anymore! Find an old Colt Python with the Colt Royal Blue or an old S&W revolver that is in museum condition. The bluing on these guns is amazing and when you look at it there seems to be an amazing depth to the bluing.
The current bluing on most production guns is just a rust preventative finish and no longer a work of art. The reason is it takes a great deal of high quality, very skilled polishing to achieve a good blue job. Parkerizing or any coated finish does not.
For a Home Defense Shotgun or even a field gun, go with the parkerized and later if you want to get fancy you can put Duracoat in any of several colors over that finish. Paying extra for most of todays factory blue finishes is a waste of money.

Also, park makes the absolute best base if you want to try adding a Teflon or paint over-finish, such as brownells Teflon/Moly, or DuraCoat. At least as durable as the factory marine coat, and you can DIY, when you can afford it.
