My bolt action rifles are my deer rifles. The safety is always on until ready to fire - I've had the rifle fall over in my blind too many times not to use the safety.

OK...one more question (not meaning to hijack....sorry)
What common Deer rifles dont have a pin block and which ones do. I am in the market for a new rifle for this season. Please keep your replies to common/modern rifles.

As far as I know Styer is the only brand that has the " safe bolt" system. Common bolt safetys either block the sear or the trigger depending on system.
To clear up a few mis conceptions on my statement of not using the safety on bolts.... I do not transport , carry , move with an unsafed rifle , however i safe the rifle by raising the bolt handle if a round is chambered . This works on all bolt rifles irreguardless of safety type or location . My area is pretty much brush free so the movement/noise of racking a bolt is not a big issue as far as spooking game goes since game is normally 100+ yards away at the closest and an empty chamber until ready to fire is not a disadvantage . The safety on Ruger markIIs and old winchesters are about the same , but remmington is different Older rugers and savages ( as well as others ) have tang safetys , Mil surp rifles have a bunch of different locations and manipulations to engage a safety. Turning the bolt utterly safes them all with no doubts or thinking about the manual of arms of the specific rifle . Its a system that works for me , and i was curious if anyone else felt the same . |

Mebbe I was wrong! RR, I thought the bolt safeties were camming into a recess in the pin...? I only have a refit Mauser, not a Winchester, so i've got limited experience... |

.....and here I thought I was the only one that raised the bolt as a safety! Seriously. I do NOT use safeties. They're always on at the wrong time. NEVER had an AD/ND while hunting/guiding.
