250 yards or less? No way with the 30 Carbine! Ak it out and buy it with all the goodies like a folding stock, bayonet, Ak74 type muzzlebrake and a grab bag of high cap mags!

Buy the 2 AKs now and save up and get another M1 Carbine later, better to have redundancy in backup.

Ak's have short stocks too, so be prepared to buy aftermarket furniture.

At 250 yards I think I'd want something I could mount a scope on easily. Neither the M1 carbine or the AK is something I'd want to depend on at 250 yards. As much as it pains me to say, of the two, the AK is probably more suited to that distance, though.

I agree with AutoFan

I personally think the M1 carbine at 200+ is beyond its effective range for anything but plinking. As for the AK it is effective at 200+ if you have one that is accurate enough at that range, something mine wasn't. It was traded for an AR.

I suggest an AK, relatively inexpensive and available ammo, mags, accessories, reputation for reliability, and you can always get an underfolder its "coolness" factor, besides easy storage and transport.
Just make sure to check it out for rust before you leave the shop.

I've fired my M1 Carbine out to 300 yards and it's pretty accurate. I expect one could "keep 'em jumpin' and fetchin" with the little carbine to that distance. I once had opportunity to shoot up an abandoned house trailer (as they used to call them here in Texas) at 400+ yards with the .30 Carbine. Let's just say that there's no place to hide inside a manufactured house that would be safe from a .30 Carbine, even at distance. It was pierced through and through, even though additional interior closet walls were sometimes in the bullet's path.

I've read that the 110 FMJ round nose .30 Carbine bullet is very stable and when penetrating, remains point on better than most other rifle cartridges. This was in an article in an old "Gun's and Ammo". The topic of the article was about brush busting cartridge myths. The author tested all the accepted brush busters but found that the .30 Carbine and the .223 M193 55 grain cartridge of all things, made it through his dowel rod box contraption and impacted the target behind with more of a semblance of accuracy than anything else. Not sure just how valid such a test truly is but it was interesting.

A high-power competitor would be comfortable with open sights well past 250 yards.

the m1 is old school. back in the early 80 everybody had one and ammo was cheap. now the ak has took over. but for short range the m1 is the best.
