CPhilip,
Ever have a problem w/the drum? Have been hesitant about getting one due to 'feeding' problems I've heard about but never witnessed at my local range or otherwise; stunning ak by the way!

Cphilip; very nice outfit! I like the look of the light colored WWII style web slings as you show there.

If one grows up around the .30 Carbine and has the chance to shoot it a lot it doesn't fail to impress, despite the denigrating published comments it's received through the years.

In one of those "do as I say and not as I do" examples I saw as a kid, I watched my dad shoot four holes through a heavy piece of steel with his WWII bring-back M1Carbine in order to make bolt holes for a base while building a homemade air compressor. I guess if one needs holes fabricated quickly... I don't recollect just how thick the steel plate was but it appeared pretty substantial. The WWII ball ammo zipped right through it and presto, instant bolt holes. At 11 or 12, any time a firearm came out was a big day so I was bouncing around there pleading "I wanna shoot it! I wanna shoot it"! So we went down to the tank dam and set up cans and had a fun Carbine shoot.

There's no way the .30 Carbine can perform like the 7.62X39 but like has been said above I'd prefer some full power .30 if I need more than the .30 Carbine cartridge. I like the distinct step between the light .30 Carbine and the .308/.30-06 and wouldn't consider the 7.62X39 a reasonable compromise. The only real reason that I have an SKS is because, back in about 1995 when the Russki SKS's were first coming in, Clinton had made some inane offhand comment to the press that " a good American" wouldn't purchase such weapons. I was at the Dallas Market Hall gun show just after that and walked past a large stack of the SKS's with a sign on them saying "$82.00 your pick." Considering Clinton's remark and stance on gun control I stopped by and purchased one and 1000 rounds of ammo like any GOOD American should.

I haven't shot it much but no. I have had no real problems with that one. It is a 75 round Chinese Norinco drum so its the type that you load from the back door and wind up with the key. Not the Russian/Romanian variant that you have to force each cartridge into like a normal Magazine and include a dummy follower so as to feed the last rounds. You have to experiment with how many turns of the key it takes to get enough tension on it to feed all the way through. But after that , it pushes through pretty darn good. However I must admit its more for show and part of a modest collection of Magazines I have. It's not really practical to carry around. Its dang heavy and the AK is a heavy gun as it is. Does look cool though!

All reproduction stuff. Typical of the later period. I am doing a collection of what I call "Cold War" guns. So the carbine was then decorated with things that were typical of its stint during the Korean war and on into the Vietnam war. So the light Tan and the Black Plastic handle on the Bayonet was fairly typical of that period.

The 30 round magazine in that picture is a real USGI early one. Those are getting very hard to find. And when you do find them they cost you at least $50 unless you run into someone that doesn't know better. And there are many fakes of those. Real ones are hard to detect if they are spilt back. That one is a Solid back.

I've handle a couple M1 Carbine rifles, recently. They are extraordinarily compact and quickly brought on-target. But the 7.62x39mm is 50% faster and more than twice the energy, with half the drop out to ~200yds. Depends on what you're looking for. For me, I've got an AK being built and that M1 Carbine on the rack at the dealer is looking awfully sweet ...

I'll pitch in:
I have AKs, and shot a few thousand rounds through my dad's .30 carbine when I was a teen.

Given that you have the M1, your major criteria should be the time/money ratio.

Can you get an AK, 10 mags, 1K rounds, spare parts and any specialized parts to make it better for you, I would say before summer?

If not, I would get a dozen good M1 mags (at least), 500 rounds of HPs, and however much you can get of ball, and a basic spares kit. I'm really partial to the Choate synthetic stocks; that may or may not be your cup of tea.

You can do >200 yards with either, but the stock AK sights are barely up to it, and the .30 carbine is getting weak. You also need to consider your ability to judge distance. Realistically, I want optics past 100, for ranging and placement. If you don't have a bolt gun, that might be better with your M1 than an AK. Just a thought...
