I own a Winchester 94 30-30. But if I was going to buy another one, i'd probably look at the Marlin 308 lever. The Marlin rifles do seem to be a little softer shooting on the shoulder, at least this is what my wife tells me.

I have 2 pre-64 Win 94 in 30/30 and they are great classic firearms. I would not say no to a Marlin or a Savage though. All good choices.

I have a Marlin Guide in 45-70 that was made before they added a couple of inches to the length. I love it. I added a Williams peep sight.

I've got a Mod 94, a Mod 336 in 30-30 and an 1895 in 45-70. I don't even bother to hunt with the 30-30s at all but there is something about the 45-70 that is a joy to shoot. You can load it up to higher pressures or use Corbon ammo in it that you can't use in an old Trap Door Springfield and with the new polymer tipped lever action safe ammo they can hold their place over a decent range.
