Laser

Not sure I've made up my mind yet on the laser........I have a g2 surefire on my mossberg attached to a laserlyte magtube rail. With my hand on the fore-end...I can hit the tailcap with my thumb or twist it quick for always on. There are many points of view.....all worth listening to. Some say the light alone gives the bad guy something to aim at........darkness in familiar territory can give you an advantage. I think I'd have to light it up before I pulled the trigger though.....just to make sure it was'nt a teenager trying to sneek out or back in (one of my biggest fears). Then again....looking around here when I get up at 4:30 to go to work.....there are always one or two lights on anyway. In a high pressure situation, there's a good chance a laser could help make that first shot count. I could also see that a glowing red dot on your chest would make you think twice about being a bad guy. And how would a jury feel if they looked at my tacti-cool shotgun.....would they think I was some nutbag looking to nail anything that walked in the door?

Lots to think about.

I'll mount a light on my Mossy and keep the laser for my handgun whenever I decide to get one. Not a neccesity on a shotty imho.

A light is a great idea. I don't see a need for a laser.

I think that a light is a definite plus, and if you don't want to use it then you don't have to. I have one mounted on both of my home defense weapons, and if I choose not to illuminate then I don't have to, but if I decide to, its a flick of a switch.

What a moron move was my thought, until I read Mossberg's 410 home defender: a well-targeted shotgun. Intended for home defense and with women in mind. In part the article said
Quote:
"After taking the gun out to the range, I can't imagine anything more suited for laser sights than a shotgun. Unlike a pistol, which is capable to pinpoint accuracy at a great distance, a shotgun's damage zone spreads outward from a central point -- in this case, from the laser beam. At the end of the shotgun's effective range, about 20 yards, the laser sight becomes just about invisible, especially in bright light of any kind."

I think a light on a home defense shotty is a great idea. A shotgun is a great point shoot tool, and with a light you can know what you are aiming at and basically know that in the center of the lighted area you are going to hit something.

I have both the Benelli M1 Supre 90 and the Wilson/Scatter Gun Tech 870 with the Surefire foreend replacement tac light. Both have the constant on/off switches and the momentary pressure pad illumination on the right side of the assembly. I like them, but they hold the same pro's and con's as any type of white light illumination on a firearm.

First rule of thumb: Use white sparingly and only if needed.

White has it's advantages but it's has the disadvantage of letting exactly the home intruder or bad guy know where exactly your head is at and your torso.

Their nice lights, but I'm afraid too many SWAT movies and actual SWAT shows demonstrate just how NOT to utilize white light mounted on the weapon.

Lights on and off quick and move - move.

Handgun, go both ways - on gun and/or off gun with light in off hand - same move.

Long gun, more or less requires, light on long gun either hand-held against or attached - same move and move some more.

One with no light, well your are in the dark, unless you have a buddy lighting the area.
