Thanks for the input everyone - I may still keep an M14 somewhere on my list...but that could easily be replaced by an FAL. Bottom line I'm going to get the M1 Garand first - then I'll need a "Homeland Defense Rifle" - and by the time the next long gun purchase comes up I'll have had plenty of time to think it over.
Thanks again, Austin |

along with the removal of the internal magazine feed by 8 round clips the longstroke gas system of the M1 Garand was tuned to a shortstroke for the M14 and the action was refined as well. Hence, less recoil, more shots per reload, more velocity (due to less gas being siphoned) and lighter weight.

got a M1A Scout and just picked up a M1 Garande. I think there both awesome. With the garande you get a longer sight radius if that matters. With the M1A you get More capacity. I wonder if the kill ratio per cartridge fired was higher in WWII than Vietnam. All I know 8 times with 30.06 ain't to shabby.

I've got a my fathers M1 and a Federal Ordinance M-14 (M1A). My father is a WWII vet and when he got his M1 from the DCM he was the happiest guy in Colorado. I was home on leave when it came in and got to go with him to pick it up at the gun shop the DCM shipped it to. While it's a great weapon, if I had to pick one as a battle rifle I think I'd stick with the M14. I've got more .308 ammo laying around here then 30-06. I know some folks don't like the Federal Ordinance receivers but my M14 shoots great and will out shoot the M1.
