I was planning on hunting this year with my 1891 7.65 Argentine, but saw this at the toystore and couldn't resist. A lightly used Remington 700 BDL model, chambered for 243 Win. I paid $400 for the rifle, and had a Weaver 3x9 scope that was in my safe mounted on it.
I had it out on Saturday and sighted it in at 100yrds, it was shooting 1" groups. I took it out again on Sunday and shot it with a 20 -25 mph crosswind, I aimed into the wind about 1" off center, and grouped 3 more in about a 1 1/2". I think she's a keeper!

Already got the dies! I haven't had time to belly up to the bench and build some handloads, but I bet I can shrink that group by half! I grew up just east of Boulder Co., and most of my hunting was on the plains, so I want to see what she'll do at 4-500yrds. That's an irresponsible shot when hunting (IMHO), but it will tell some tales about how it will handle longer yardage shots at varmints.

4-500 isn't an irresponsible shot if you've put in the trigger time and the legwork to make 1 shot hits. 1MOA at 500 is only a smidgen over 5" that'll put you in the boiler-room every time if you've practiced at that range and worked up a proper drop table.

Good point, I have heard of Antelope being taken at that range routinely. Federal cartridge specs are: 100gr bullet, 2210fps @ 300yrds, 12.4" drop, 1085ft-lbs of energy. So, you are correct, that it is doable, but a lot of variables come into play at that yardage. I have NO problem with trigger time!!
With handloads I should be able to lessen some of the variables. Rex

Well the biggest variable you have to tackle is wind drift, and there is no way to get around it except by learning how to read the wind. If you have the skills to maintain cheek weld, trigger control, and follow through on 200yd shots, you can do it at 500. You just have to practice enough to get used to it, the wind however is a whole different ballgame. But at 500 it's very attainable, especially with modern equipment.

A good idea is to make yourself a relatively small windage chart to keep with you for a little help. My dad and I worked out a windage chart for my rifle that he shrunk down to the size of a business card and then laminated. I keep it with my rifle at all times. It gives head winds, crosswinds, tailwinds, etc - all to degrees and different variables, including the drop or push you should expect from them. All that is a little tough to remember, hence the small reference. Very much recommended.
