To the OP, if you are looking for a decent gun at the price level you stated, I would go with the bigger names in the field(Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River, etc) and check their entry level offerings. If you are comfortable reading and following instructions, I would say build your own and you could probably come in under $600. Any number of companies out there sell kits to do this and you can get into the AR game this way.

As for ammo, that is a whole other story. A year ago I got 1k 62gr rounds for $180. This year the cheap stuff(wolf) is $250 for 1k with the good stuff around $350 for 1k. I now shoot the majority of my rounds in training and less of it for just leisure, it has gotten way too pricey just to shoot for shooting's sake. It is up to you to decide how much it is worth to you.

Just my 2c

If I had about $600 (shipping and transfer fee) to blow I'd get one.
+1. CMMG is actually selling lots of variations for $599. These are base rifles, but anything from CMMG is worth the money. They take care of their customers. Nice to have them local too!

The limited supply may be because of the sandbox, the increase is price is across the board for all ammo, because the price of all metals has skyrocked over the past few years. The cheap carbon sheetmetal we used to get at work isnt cheap anymore. I think its actually more expensive than the stainless was a few years ago.

Stainless steel through our supplier is $2.65 to $2.85 a pound now. Used to be right over a buck.

I have the Bushmaster E2S modular carbine with the 6 position telestock. It's more than you indicated you wanted spend, but I love shooting this AR and am glad I spent the extra money. Ordered it from Davisons Gallery of Guns and had it at my local gun shop in 3 working days.

The AR-15 is a fun rifle, also remember to get a 5.56 chamber and not the .223 chamber. A 5.56 rifle can fire 5.56 and .223, but you'll get high pressures if you shoot 5.56 in a .223 chamber.

I know I've posted my rifle before, so here it is again!!!

For yourself pick from bushmaster , stag ( they make among others S&W ars , or a rock river . In any of the three listed brands you wont get a great bargan , but you will get a good serviceable rifle where all the critical crap has been done right. If you want to put it on 1911 terms well you are buying a base springfield or kimber .. lots to be better , but what you buy will run fine as it is .
