I had another thought about selecting a hunting rifle. I suppose it is different if you're hunting for meat or hunting for trophy. An Alexander Arms Beowulf .50 might not be the best thing to shoot a deer with unless you're hunting for trophy ONLY. Hard to guess how much meat might be ruined with something like that.

Don't overlook the Saiga 308. It is an AK variant and for the price a great buy.
Hi cap mags are a little steep but more more are hitting the market every day. I enjoy shooting mine.

Here's your choices:
M1a (M14) - great choice, solid rifle. FAL - great choice, go with a good brand, there are some of questionable quality around. H&K91/Cetme/G3 clone - PTR91 is the one to go with for this type. This was my choice, and I'm quite happy with it. AR10 - Yet another good choice, at the high end on cost. Saiga - The inexpensive one of the bunch, but overall a reliable rifle. Usually not up to the others in accuracy. I've shot all of these, and wouldn't feel poorly equipped with any of them in my hands. It really comes down to personal preference, but those 5 are about the only options when it comes to a 7.62 nato semi-auto combat style rifle (am I missing one??). Find someone who has one of these, and shoot it!

This big game season Im using a Saiga .308, w/h a Bushnell 3200 3-9x Ellite. It shoots under 2" grp wh Federal Hi-shock. For around $350, its an outstanding deal.
I hear in Dec more Hi-cap mags, will be avalible.

My semi is a fal stg58 pattern on an imbel receiver . I have a couple of .308 bolts to hunt with . I prefer and use different rifles because i expect different things from a hunting rifle and a defense rifle . The good news is that you can pick up a " parts " fal or cmte and a decent bolt for the price of an m14 clone or ar10 . If you reload or think you will dont go with the cmte because the hk pattern guns have fluted chambers that are a bit hard on brass .

I have a Armalite AR-10, and like the rifle. If you are into the "black rifles." Remington 700 or Savage for a bolt rifle.

You can get a BAR Safari for $934.00. People always seem to forget Browning make a semiauto. Still in wood as well.

Springfield M1A is my reccommendation. A tough gun and accurate. Springfield mags are pricey though, but there are other brands.
