Yep, a new barrel should only cost about 100 bucks leaving you plenty of money to spend on ammo. :)

Solid advice Mercalf! +1 on the shorter barrel and tactical stock. Go to Mossberg Shotgun Barrels and scroll down to this:

MOG90015 Mossberg Barrel, Model 500, 6 Shot, 12ga, 18.5 inch, cylinder bore, bead sight for $89! (Same place you saw the Choate stock....)

So, for around $125, you can keep your current shotty, get a new barrel and a new stock.........and more ammo!

Thanks, everyone for the advice. My problem is that my Mossberg is a 500a, which means it holds only 2+1. Removing the stopper will only give me a 3, or 4+1 depending on what rounds I'm using. I've been snooping around online, and I really like:

1) GunBroker.com guns: Mossberg JIC (Just In Case) 500 Cruiser Kit 18.5" (item: 92263900 ends: Feb-13-08 0559 PM)
2)GunBroker.com guns: Mossberg Tactical Model 590 12Ga. (item: 91684128 ends: Feb-15-08 08:47:24 PM)
3) GunBroker.com guns: Remington 870 Express 12ga 18in 7shot 3in cham (item: 92184507 ends: Feb-14-08 07:52:09 PM)

If I can trade in the Hi-Point and pay a smaller fee for another shotty, I wouldn't mind having two. However, would it be unwise of me to trade both in and get an 18'' tactical 7 or 8+1 setup?

(Oh, as far as the flashlight: some stocks are available where the racking handle has a flashlight molded inside...it's what the police use)

This is what I have been considering for home defense. It's considered an AOW which falls under the NFA, so will need to see if it's legal in your state. There is a $5 tax that is added onto the price since it is an AOW.

Matiki - I guess it doesn't, does it? I guess it doesn't matter if the light is on when you're cycling the action, as long as you can use it before you shoot. Then again there are the Surefire lights that replace the foregrip....but that's back to expensive again.

Geez Walvord, that thing's dangerous on BOTH ends! I can't imagine the recoil on that puppy.

I've got Mossberg 500s in both 12 and 20 gauge, the 12 has a 28" barrel and the 20 has a 26". The forend on my 12 has developed a bad side to side wobble but otherwise works fine - it's my current bedroom/HD shotty. Unloading the 20 gauge causes the tang safety to partially engage, even when just clearing the mag. Not sure what the issue is with that one but it doesn't inspire confidence as an HD gun.

I made my monthly trip to the gunshop last month (layaway payments) and finally decided to grab the 20 gauge 870 Express Youth (20" barrel) I'd been eyeing for months now. The shorter LOP on the Youth fits me like a glove and even the basic Express Model feels more solid and smooth than either of my Mossys. I'm contemplating selling or trading both of them to fund a pair of 870s.

For my shotgun I have a weapon mounted light with a momentary switch at my finger tips.

Matiki; could you share with us what your exact light setup is? I'm researching options but I don't really care for the surefire foregrip solution which is probably the best.

I really want something that clamps to the magazine tube. I'm willing to buy a decent Surefire light etc. my gun will have a standard stock so how do you have yours set up?

You might want to consider keeping your Mossberg set up for hunting and get a 500 Tactical for home defense. The 500 tactical comes with the collapsible 6 position stock, 18 1/2" barrel, forearm sling, and extra shells carrier.

I bought the 500 Tactical first and am now looking for a Mossberg 500 hunting shotgun.
