12 ga HD? Opinions Please.

Looking to trade in my Mossberg 500 34'' hunting 12 ga, and my new Hi-Point 995 for a home defense/clearing 12 ga shotgun. Opinions on models?

I keep a NEF (New England Firearms) Pardner Pump around for home defense. It's light and easy to carry around (18.5") , and relatively inexpensive.

Get a shorter barrel for your Mossy! Then you can change up if the need arises.

I have a Mossberg 6 shot with a 6 position stock and pistol grip for HD. Just get an 18" barrel and if you really feel the need, a collapsible/multi-position stock.

Shorter barrel is the cheapest way to go. If you want a change, I love my 870P Magnum, 18" slug barrel with rifle sights. Devastating home defense, killer with a one oz. slug out to 200 yards or more.

Anything 20 inches or less will be pretty handy - but if you're clearing you won't want to be without a light, which means an automatic, which means expensive...plus the light. I keep my shotgun in the bedroom usually - there's a light and a handgun if I need to go have a look around. Just my $0.02

Why does a light necessitate an automatic?

Just get a 18.5" Mossberg 500 barrel to replace the 34" and call it good. It is what I use!

+1.

Consider a folding stock to switch out when you're keeping it in "home defense mode". Switch back to full stock and long barrel for range/hunting. I have a Mossy 500 and love this setup.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.
