well... it's not exactly like an M1

Modern Firearms - Rifle - SKS carbine

Fifth picture down. You can see that the ammo slides down, into a double stack internal magazine. You push the ammo down with your thumb and the stripper clip stays put. Pull out the stripper clip when the ammo is loaded. Slingshot the bolt carrier to load, and have at it.

I bought some from Cabelas a few years ago, and they seem to work okay. My SKS is over 40 years old (brought back from Vietnam - Russian made), but I assume that they all are manufacturered the same way.

Yea.. its a bit more like an M14 stripper clip loading it. Its not an enbloc clip or nothing. Pretty easy though. Pretty fast with practice. Probably near as fast as changing a magazine. Maybe faster with some practice.

There is quite a few slight variants and things. Yugos do not have Chrome lined barrels. Some have Gas tube cut offs and Grenade launchers. A few had removable mags even... But.. primary action wise they are all very similar.

I have a Russian from 1953.

Beautiful Russin, cphilip. I just purchased a Norinco SKS with a milled trigger group and screwed in barrel. Couldn't be happier with it. Eventually I'd like to pick up one of those paratrooper length ones factory made to take AK mags.

Just wish it was a non rearsenal but it is a fairly correct example even still with the original type of Artic Birch stock so I am pleased with it. It is a very mint gun. The guy I bought it from also has a real nice Norinco he was wanting to sell. I might have to pursue it too. But I have so many other things that take precedent to that since I have the Russian Izzy already.

I had one of the 16" detachable AK mag. ones. I think it was called a SKS-M. The only problem is that it won't feed hollowpoints that well and would only work ok with Chinese made mags and not a 20 or 30 rd. eastern bloc mag.

I have a SKS with a Chinese made 20 rd. non-detachable mag. I have had ok luck with them. The SKS's I have had usually shot a lot better than the MAK 90(AK) I had.

Only thing to add.... Keep it relatively clean. I once took care of a 16 year old who was shot by his younger brother when his SKS went full auto (and got away from him) because the firing pin stuck in the "out" position. Not pretty...

Good point. They do not have spring assisted return firing pins. They can be retrofitted them them though.
