dont know if this caliber will interest you but a Berreta CX4 Storm. Figured it'd be a good rifle because you dont need a 223 or 7.62 for home tactics and is small enough for quick movement. Ive handled one in a store and it felt like a sturdy weapon...a lot better quality than the Keltec.

Sorry missed the bottom. I would say your kind of limited to a 47/74 or a M1. Unless, you go to a pistol caliber.

I've never looked into the Gunsite courses but from the info on their web site, it appears that you are limited to 3 calibers:

Thanks for the input ladies and gents. Yeah I just now saw the notice about it being one of those three calibers. Hmm. Looks like I'm heading with the AK then.
I don't have any huge gripes about the functionlity of the AR or "how tough" it is versus an AK. My main concern falls with some of the gripes I have been hearing about the .223 not having the 'oomph' to take something or someone out of action that the larger calibers don't have a problem with. Regardless of whether or not the concern is well-founded... I simply cannot afford .223. I would love to get into reloading but at this point in my life that is completely out of the question. I don't have the time and I move often enough to make it a PITA. Don't get me wrong... I *loved* my Bushmaster. Wish I could have kept it. But the costs of ownership and enjoyment are out of my reach.

Well, don't confuse the nonsense about the 5.56 being too "weak". It's one of the more lethal small arms combat calibers. Remember how many Germans bore witness to Americans getting up after taking a burst of 8mm from a machine gun, and how many Americans watched Germans take half a clip of .30-06 and run off.
That said, the 5.45 is about as lethal (same idea, very similar size) and the AK-74 is probably as good as you'll get if you want to keep similar balistics, low recoil, and a proven design like the AK is. Oh, and it's dirt cheap to shoot. Your call, but I think the AK-74 is your winner given your requirements. -B |
