I know my uncle does a lot of guided hunting trips, and in the past several years he has noticed the savage rifles getting more popular among them. I know for a fact I have shot the tactical .308 rifles and they are every bit as accurate as any Remington, winchester or whatever. And that is from an out-of-the-box rifle.
I know my next bolt gun will be a savage.....

Savage Tactical is a good choice. Take a look at the Weatherby Vangard. It's made by Howa but shoots like a Weatherby. My son has the .300 Wby. Mag and it shoots tight, even with factory ammo. I've shot the .30-06 & .270 in Vangard and each outshot most other rifles at the range.

a + VG #1 , i agree with samh , i got to fiddle with a Tikka T3 , and i see what all the fuss is about , but i am quite sure they cost more than $600 dollars ? but they are worth every penny , the fins build great rifles , some of the nicest i have seen too

I shoot a Remington 700 BDL in .308 Win and i love it. The action is very smooth and it is pretty light.

Well I own a Savage 10 in .308 and the best grouping to date at 100yds with box ammo is right at 1.25 inch. The trigger feels a bit gritty the stock feels a bit clumsy. It is a good rifle for the money. I would recommend the Savage rifles to anyone without hesitation.
With that being said I also own a Tikka T3 light stainless in 7mag. It is guaranteed to be a sub-moa gun and it really is. The trigger is absolutely awesome, has no creep, no over travel and the stock design is better thought out and more comfortable (matter of personal fit) It is a nicer gun than the Savage but it cost more. Where I live you can get a Savage at wally world for less than $400.00 with a scope. The Tikka's come with scope rings and no scope and we all know that the sky's the limit on scopes. I got a very good deal on my Tikka and paid $550.00 for it, I was at a Bass Pro in Chicago and they had a $680.00 price tag on the same rifle if I remember correctly. So be sure to shop around before you buy. If I could only have one I'd take the Tikka even with the higher price tag. I just find it more pleasurable to shoot. I guess you just need to decide if you want a nice gun or a really nice gun. |

I am not up on current prices but I have about a ten year old Savage 110/FP in .308. The trigger could be better, but I understand the new ones are much better than mine. I spent a little money on a glass bed kit from Brownells and free floated the barrel. It is not hard to do, and it makes a great shooting rifle sickeningly accurate. I have a Tasco target scope on it. Total investment under $500 and with good ammo it will shoot sub M.O.A. groups as long as you will.

Get a newer Savage with the Accutrigger. Savage Arms Hunter Series Model 11FCNS
The trigger is adjustable by you if you want. Good out of the box and great price / value ratio. I would stay away from the rifle / scope combo. Buy the rifle separate, then invest in just as much $ on the scope as you have on the rifle. I like my nikon monarch on my savage. Edit to add, regardless of msrp, I picked a 111fcns in .30-06 for around $385. |

You can find Tikka T3 Lite for about $525, if you shop around, the T3 Hunter about $75 to $100 more.

Thanks for all the opinions and info, it's much appreciated. I've been going to local gun shops checking prices, but I still haven't decided on which one.
