Thanks guys, I know that if I'm forced to shoot a weapon indoors in the dark regardless of the caliber or type of weapon I'm not going to hear so well after words, I just didn't want the flash/bang to be so much as to disorient myself and slow my follow up re-action time.
I know, I should just sleep in my electronic ear muphs then I could hear the bg and not go deaf while shooting him, I should also probably just wear my yellow range glasses, you know for better night vision and all, maybe sleep standing up with my back against the wall and the shottie proped up to my shoulder.

Any weapon indoors without hearing protection is loud and may damage your hearing, but you won't really notice the noise while you are doing it.

From outside a shoot house M-16's sound really loud, when you are in running it (not that you should run it without hearing protection) it doesn't seem nearly as loud.

Thanks.

Check out the "tactical" loads; they're loaded down to handle easier at moderate ranges/indoors, etc. For my SxS I have some Aguilla Mini-Shells, but they're not quite long enough to cycle reliably in my Mossy 500 (short enough that about every second or third "rolls" end-over-end while cycling the action). YMMV, however, so you may try them for yourself. I seriously doubt they would cause any auto to cycle. The ones I have are a mix of #4 and #1 buck for pattern density, but I can still carry a half-dozen or more in my regular jeans pocket comfortably.
Stay safe,

Chuck Brick.

A while back a poster stated something to the effect that shotgun’s had excessive muzzle blast/noise when fired indoors when compared to handguns. This struck a cord because I use a shotgun for HD and it ran contrary to what I’d experienced. So I did a little research, there’s not too much out there, but here’s a couple articles:

"The sound levels of firearms are about 125 to 140 dB for rimfire rifles, 140 to 150 dB for rimfire pistols... and 150 to 160 dB for centerfire rifles, pistols and shotguns"

Gun Health Hazards Can Be Dealt With - Hand Guns | Guns Magazine | Find Articles at BNET.com

This points out that all centerfire guns are about in the same noise range. Close, but not good enough. Then I stumbled upon this:

Firearms and Hearing Protection | March 2007 | The Hearing Industry Resource

Please note this chart represents peak impulse levels of standard police weapons taken at an indoor firing range. Notice that both the 9mm and .357 were measured as louder than the 12GA as were the .40 and .45 depending on the platform used.

The results pretty much confirmed the 1st article that all centerfires are about in the same range. The only caliber that really stood out is the .357 Mag.

Another "factor" that was cited in that thread was muzzle flash. Sorry I couldn't find anything on this. I have shot my Benelli quite a bit at night doing low-light training and as it doubles as my muskrat/beaver control gun, muzzle flash with my #1 buck or standard birdshot is a non-issue. Since I also use a weapon mounted light for HD, the flash isn't even noticeable.

For my use, I’ll stick with the shotgun, based on the chart, they all look to be pretty close. Decide for yourselves...........

I made that decision 23 years ago...a 12 gauge. (because I don't own a 10 gauge)

A great home defense weapon, and as Clint Smith would say "you use whatever you have". An 870 would stop the problem real fast, and most likely you will be the victor. As far as blast, your eyes will quickly adjust, and your hearing will shut down from the adrenaline rush. And hopefully you will never need it. But if you do practice, practice.....

As I've often said, "At handgun range, the Shotgun is the undisputed KING." Nothing is more "handgun range" than indoors.

Stay safe,
