Now that i have recognized oly, and their attempt to recover i will say that my ar is a rock river , and if i buy another one it will be either rock river , bushmaster, or stag and in all honesty most likely a stag . Stag wholly builds the S&W ar pattern rifles , and builds a lot of components you find in other top name rifles . While i wont tell you " Dont do it " I will say that i wouldnt at that price . An oly would have to be down around 5 bills to get my attention .

SA no longer builds the S&W AR's and has not for some time. You are correct though when you say that CMT (SA) sells parts to many different companies. A lot of these companies reject CMT parts and send them back. CMT then sells them to companies that do not have as high of QC standards.

The reason why S&W pulled their guns from SA (and stopped buying their parts) is that they were having a lot of issues.

For quality AR's, I would only look at LMT, Colt Noveske Rifleworks, ADS, Charles Daly (yes CD) and BCM.

Recent reviews of BM and CD: A day in the life of a BM LE Dealer - M4Carbine.net Forums & Charles Daly LE M4 (review) - M4Carbine.net Forums

I did not know that about SA and SW , however the local smith rep is a bud and i will confirm .
Other than that mis speak i speak to a " consumer grade " ar pattern rifles . and stand by my post . IMHO i posted the " bang for the buck " rifles that a fella could buy and be secure that the sucker will work .

Can't speak to the quality of their lowers, etc. But Oly's broach cut barrels are top notch. I have an AR built by Dedicated Technology with an Oly barrel that's an absolute tack driver.

as I can't remember.I have a bushmaster and it's no where near the same quality. If it meant not having an AR I 'd buy it in a minute!

Unless they changed very recently, Olympic Arms have .223 chambers, not 5.56x45. Bushmaster got real spotty with quality control for a few years (Get 'em, Cerberus! Do your thang!), but if you have an Oly that looks better than you might consider retiring that Bushmaster...

It is VERY common for ANY AR that has a 1/9 twist to have a .223 Wylde chamber.

Grant, is this true of RRA uppers as well? My understanding is that they were true 5.56, even though they're 1:9.

Generally speaking, yes. Manufacturers that produce 1/9 twist AR's are betting that the consumer that buys their weapons will NEVER use high end (read expensive) Mil-Spec Ball ammo in their guns so they will never find out that there is an issue.

The M193 ammo will generally work just fine in a .223 Wylde chamber, but when you get into M855 and MK262 is where you can find the issues.

Huh. That's exactly the ammo I plan on shooting, too. I'll drop you a line when the upper finally gets here so we can work out how to correct this, if it's at all possible.

You weapon may shoot it well (especially if you are just a casual plinker). The shooters that come into the most problems are the ones that attend high round count carbine schools.

The only way to fix it is to ream the barrel with a 556 NATO reamer (which we have).
