I am not up to speed on the ballistics of the .44 magnum out of a rifle. Off the top of my head I think 75 yards would be ok but I think 200 is asking a little much. I may be wrong on that though. Two Ruger products come to mind. They have a .44 magnum lever action ( and used to have a semi auto) that looks a bit like a 10-22 with a lever under it. Having never owned one I can't speak to their reliability. A wood stocked Mini-30 also looks pretty tame, but you can go to hi capacity mags if it hits the fan.

Red face Does this look like an "black evil rifle"?

Not exactly a "black evil rifle". I put vinyl camo tape over the fiberglass vietnam era stock and a 5 round mag and wallah! This is my bad weather deer rifle, when I don't want to take my good rifles out. It doesn't draw attention, except that people are snobish and think I'm poor or something and can't afford a nicer rifle. Maybe their right? BTW, an SKS with a fixed mag is even less "threatening" to passers by, but again the only looks I have recieved while hunting with this are looks of pitty. (little do they know.)

Anyway, I get your point and think a lever action sounds like a good choice given your criteria. I have a Marlin turdy-turdy and a Winchester Trapper .357 mag and like them both. My Dad has the trapper model in 30-30. I really like the trapper becuase it is only 30" long with the 16" barrel. That makes it nicely compact and quick handling.
