Sighting In A New Rifle - Question

All,

I just purchased my first rifle recently (an AR ) and I have a question about sighting it in.

I understand the idea of adjusting the sights to get the point of aim and the point of impact to come together. My question is, do I have to have a stand similar to the one in the attached photo, or can I use sandbags or just the bench to rest the rife on?

Brian

Sandbags will work just fine. The main thing is to have the rifle supported and stable. Without it supported, it will make it harder To get the rifle accurately zeroed. Good luck and take your time.

+1 to everyone else so far. A nice bench rest set-up is nice, but the key is to stabilize or even immobilize your rifle.

I had a friend bought a rifle vise everytime he fired it the recoil popped the forearm out of it and he had to readjust everything for his next shot, took him 10 times as long as just shooting over bags,i use 1 bag in front and 1 bag at the rear and adjust the bag on the rear of the stock to change elevation then shoot also when adjusting scope tap on adjustment knobs after moving crosshairs sometimes the crosshairs don't move but tapping creates vibration and they shift

I use sand bags loaded with kitty litter. Lighter and works the same.

Start at 25 yards. Get a good pattern near bull’s eye, and then move out to 100 yards.

Bags, or even a bipod would help.
