9mm AR15 - how well do they run?

I am in the market for a 9mm carbine and love ARs, so when I stumbled upon a 9mm AR15 a little light went off in my head.

Anyway, how reliable are these things? I'd only use it for a fun gun, but one that kept jamming is no fun.

The one available to me is an actual Colt, 9mm from the factory - not a conversion. Looks like many other 9mm ARs deviate a bit from the colt parts.

Any help greatly appreciated!

I kept a dept. issue gun for awhile. Same as in the picture, except full auto.
It was fun to shoot and ran without a hitch. No problems at all.

I'm interested in one for range fun also... I thought RRA was going to make one with an integral 9mm magwell?

You may want to visit the Mecca of all things AR, they have a FAQ about 9mm AR's here: AR15.COM

Colt and Olympic style conversions are the usual suspects. I've shot a Colt (no problems) but owned neither.

The run great, but the real hitch is the mags. You will spend a few bucks for some quality ones, but the cheap ones just stink.

9mm AR

One of the regulars at the gunshop has one just like the pic. He had trouble with the magazines that came with it. Bought a couple from Brownells and it runs fine. All they are is modified Uzi mags, but they worked better than the two plastic ones he had. He now actually thinks the previous owner sold it because it wasn't working 100%. I was surprised that it kicks as much as it does, it was more than I expected at first. Not bad, but a surprise at first.

I purchased a Bushmaster Carbon 15 9mm Carbine two years ago which has been very reliable, economical and fun to shoot. :) You may also want to consider the line of Berretta CX4 Carbines.

Ok thanks guys. Long ago I learned that good magazines make the difference!

The AR available to me is a flatside lower receiver. I'm not 100% sold on that feature....

If I can get some pics I'll share them here.

Our Colt 9mm subguns at work (12" barrel, semi/full auto) run really well.

You say a "flatside" receiver...do you mean it has no forward assist? (Sorry, I'm a .gov weenie and don't know all the lingo besides what they give us...)

If that's so, you don't need one with a blowback-operated gun, as there's no locking of the bolt into the chamber.
