This is so true, for most a 500 is fine. If you are going to take a shotgun course or compete in 3 gun matches then get the 590

I think as of right now I am going to stick with my 500. But I do want to get a 590 as well some day. I don't even have a place to shoot my shotguns right now so getting some rounds through a new one would be difficult. I may try to find a good gunsmith locally that can silver solder a front sight base on my 500 barrel for me so i can run ghost sights. Or I could just get the rail for the rear and run some kind of red dot. But, perhaps I am just looking for somewhere to spend money. Haha. I just can't get enough guns and gun stuff!! Thanks for all the replies!

I recently bought a 590. I did alot of research first and thought I was buying a 590A1, but that's another story.

The only difference between a 590 and 590A1 is that the A1 has a heavy barrel, metal trigger guard and metal safety. The bayo lug and ghost ring sight aren't exclusive to the A1. Aside from the metal parts and heavier barrel, the 590 is the same gun. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything anywhere that showed that the 590 was heavier built than a 500.

Keep your 500, and get a different barrel for it; I have a 20" with rifle sights on mine.

Now is a GREAT time to look for used shotgun barrels; they tend to go up 20-30% in the fall when hunting season rolls around.

Forget about reading, go look at the two side by side, and take 'em apart if you can... its obvious.

When I got my Mossberg they did not have a 590 in stock and did not know when they would. But they did have a 500A that holds eight rounds that was on sale for under $300 out the door so that is what I got. I am plenty happy with it though it is my HD shogun and hopefully will not be needed a lot of use. I do put lots of rounds through it because with the Knoxx Stock it is so much fun to shoot

Well, In my book metal parts v. plastic parts and a heavier barrel = better built. Still, the 500 is an excellent shotgun.

I have had both, you would not believe how much of a differance that 1.5" barrel makes, plus I found with the 590 that it becomes to nose heavy with a full load of slugs. The longer barrel is harder to handle in tight spots. For HD I would take the 500, for outdoor work, the 500 is easy to carry, the 590 is nicer to shoot because of the weight. Whichever you get, buy a Limbsaver pad for it, they make a big differance.

I put the Knoxx Spec ops stock on my 590 A1. With the adjustable length of pull...it really makes for a great fit and great recoil reduction. They also make a folding unit...if you're worried about CQB.

I've got zero experience with the 500...so I'm just sharing my impressions of the 590. Also...not pitching for Knoxx...but I'm very happy with my purchase.

I have one on my 590 as well, I love mossberg controls, but I think the 870 control setup works better with the Specops stock. I put the Medium grind to fit Limbsaver on my specops, I call it the Wussmaster 2000
I found I had to grind down the stock around the bolt locking tab to keep my fingers from getting cut, also found it changed the angle of my finger on the trigger making it uncomfortable. The plus side is the pistol grip helps control the gun and allows you to suck it into your shoulder holding it on target while you reload.

I also bought the powerpack, but only use the spare ammo part
