Hey Guys,

I can't find a 590 anywhere so I can hold it, but is the 590 much different than the 590A1 (even harder to find). This will be my first shotgun purchase and I want it for home defense. I've shot a 500 before but it feels a bit flimsy to me.

Should I get the 590 or 590A1? Is it a big difference? Thanks!

Nice hijack there Gunlock! Haha, I'm just bustin your balls. It's cool.

As far as the difference between the 590 and the 590A1, I think the A1 has the heavy barrel and the 590 has the standard barrel. Someone please, correct me if I'm wrong here. What are you planning on doing with this shotgun?

This was taken from "Wikipedia":

The Model 590A1 is a Model 590 with an aluminum trigger guard and safety, and a heavier barrel, intended for military use under the most extreme conditions. The 590A1 is generally sold through military and law enforcement channels, though in most jurisdictions the 18.5" and 20" models may be legally purchased by private persons. 590A1s with 14" barrels are Title II firearms, and may be purchased by private persons in NFA-legal states.

The riot gun versions of the Model 500 (Persuader and Mariner) are available with an 18.5" or 20" (47cm or 51cm) barrel depending on magazine capacity. The 590 is only available with a 20" barrel and flush-fit magazine tube. The 590A1 is available with a 14" (35.5cm), 18.5", or 20" barrel. One model sold as Model 590 (catalog item 51663) is technically a 590A1, as it uses the heavy barrel and military trigger group, but unlike models designated 590A1 it is sold on the civilian market.

Unlike Model 500 and 590 shotguns (with the exception of ghost-ring sight 590 models), Model 590A1 shotguns cannot be easily fitted with the factory heat shield, due to the heavy barrel. A heat shield and bayonet lug are required for military 3443G Type I riot shotguns, and some 590A1s are so equipped, but it is not clear if the 590A1 heat shields have ever been offered for sale outside of the military market.

I have two of the 590 mariners, with the MarineCoat finish. They are indestructable. I initially bought and carried them in Alaska for bears, where they spent time bouncing around in the bottom of drift boats. They show no signs of wear and tear from this mistreatment, which is testament to the durability of the coating.

Both came from the factory with both a pistol grip, and a full stock. With the pistol grip, they are a handful!

Now I find they are ideal for home defense, with the 18.5 inch barrel and 7-shot capacity. I see that the mariners are considerably more expensive than the 500 now, which might affect my decision if I was looking for a HD shotgun today.

So I decided to get the 590. My 500 is out on loan for right now so I needed something. What a way to justify buying a new gun, huh? Anyways, I swapped out the stock forend for a Surefire 623FA. So far I really like this shotgun, especially the ghost ring sights!

Enjoy the gun porn:

590 is a great choice! I bought the 500a only because funds were short at the time. However, I think th 500a is still a good option for anyone and mine has preformed perfectly. I can't wait to see the pics when I get home, my workplace has some sort of filter that blocks them.

I didn't think the 590s were available in a 18.5 inch barrel unless you get the 590A1...

Did you know that the model 590 comes in a HB or heavy barrel model?
