For my Wife I went outside the box and put a Stevens 3" DBL Coach gun by her bed side. Two 3" #1 Buck ever ready. Simple and effective. It is also significantly smaller in the overall length department.
(It was my flooded timber duck gun!)

I love my 870 20" riot gun with rifle sights and xtd mag. There are newer guns on the market but since mid 70's it has served me well. It is always by the bed, 2-3/4" 0 buck in the mag, slugs on the elastic side saddle.

Anyways...that 'shuck-shuck' sound you hear from a shotty, may completely prevent ever having to fire one, but if you have it...
Or give the BG time to take cover and now he knows where you are and what you got,I prefer the Bang notification

There's a reason DBL/BBLs were so popular, even when lever, bolt, and pump action repeaters were readily available in the late 19th century, many of the same reasons you (and I) still like them. Shorter, handle lighter (two bbls aren't really much - if any - lighter, but with the weight between the hands and nearer the body they handle lighter, but with enough weight to be "shootable"), and have the fastest, surest follow-up shot of anything. Of course, it also can serve as the "Impact Weapon from Hell" if needed, being two pieces of carbon steel pipe welded together.
Admittedly the third/fouth/etc. shots take longer, but unless one is in a combat situation, this is debatable as a major concern. If you're being attacked by the Zombie Hordes, get your AK/AR/Gunship instead.
I also like that I can put mine (broken down, of course) into a standard briefcase along with a handgun and several loads for both. (Ask me why I know. Well, no, don't ask.)

Stay safe,

Chuck Brick.

Well, I already said pump, but a short side by side is also nice, like the Stoeger Coach gun. Overall length of my coach gun is significantly shorter than my 500 Persuader, even though both have 20 inch barrels.

For a small apartment the Coach gun followed up by my 1911 was my set-up of choice.

Having used a shotty as part of the toolkit for some years both on the job as well as at home i will chime in with my ( addimitidly myoptic ) observations . For myself , my wife , my kids , and others i can assure training and supervision during training i recommend an auto shotgun . For your average officer ( read shoots only for qualification or a citizen who does same ) i recommend a pump shotgun and further recommend it be stored at cruser ready for defense ( which is hammer down on an empty chamber , mag loaded ) . I dont think most ( including myself ) benefit from such things as extended mag tubes or side saddles , not to speak of trick stocks . Note tho that i just bought a semi tricked rem 1100 auto which holds 7+1 . I suspect that when i put the extended mag on the 28" mod choked barrel i got with it as well as the 20 well its going to be just the ticket for the pidgens in the elevator we own as well as the exit of some shops .

If you can run ( and every one in your house) can run an auto that functions with FULL HOUSE loads ( race guns many times demand reduced recoil loads to function properly .) then run an auto , it will soak up recoil and make it nicer for smaller shooters . If there is any question to the long term dedication to the shotgun then run some sort of quality pump ( i would say either an 870 rem or a 590 mossy tho i run a pre ww2 mod 12 winchester myself lol . Point is autos do some things better , including soaking up recoil , and running one handed , however they come at a price of better maintenance and more intensive training than the pumps .

So do I. The shuck shuck sound is just to let the dead BG's buddies know that I have more rounds.

So many pumps, so little SA's! Oh, and you WILL get that nice shuck-shuck sound from cycling the AK action!

If new to firearms or do not want to do the maintenance get a good 12ga pump gun. Depending on where you plan to use it, would determine what type on ammo to load in it. I keep a 870 by the bed, it has 8 rounds on 7-1/2 trap loads in it, plus it 4 r #4 buckshot and 2 slugs rounds on a stock carrier. I think that 7-1/2 shot in the house would not go through as many walls as 00 or #4 buckshot. I would also go with a light/laser on it. Just my 2 cents.

Rustynuts owes me a new keyboard, as I've just drooled all over mine.
