What is the best shotgun choke for SD & why?

I assume cylinder (same as open right?) or improved.

Side note, I assume 00 buck
-Is there another thread on best SD shot?
-Best vs BG, not good for the walls.

00 or #4... open choke or cylinder. That gives you the best patterns at SD distances with the heavy shot and also leaves the option open for slugs.

Generally, the more open a shotgun choke is, the better it will pattern large shot.

This is not always true, some buckshot loads actually recommend shooting with full choke, and it will actually say, " for best use full choke is recommended."

Self Defense shotguns are usually used at short ranges so the spread of the shot is more important than pattern quality.

Years ago, before X-full and super full turkey chokes were on the market, I manufactured turkey chokes of various configurations for custom turkey guns and made lots of extra money doing so. Also, for "turkey shoot"shooters that would shoot playing cards at 33 feet in competitions. These chokes were so tight that it was like shooting a rifle for the first 10 to 15 yards. They had all kinds of muzzle brakes on them and were very popular, so popular that they had to start a "custom" choke bracket because the custom chokes I built were winning all of the shoots.

Even some manufacturers recommend full choke for shooting slugs a long distance with accuracy. Most commercial slugs are sized to go through a full choke without any problems due to liability issues. Of course, shooting a slug or even buckshot through a really tight choke can ruin it, and if a threaded choke,I have seen them shot right out of the barrel and ruined.

No.There is a difference. A cylinder bore has no choke at all, its like shooting through a pipe. The improved choke does have a small constriction at the end of the barrel that acts to make the patterns more uniform, thus the name "improved".

Both of them will work for S.D. quite well.
