Looking at several semi-auto rifles but cant make a decision.

I am looking for a semi-auto rifle for under $1000. I know I cant touch an AR for that , but I have done some research and found a plethera of options that are with in my budget.

CETME 308
Romanian AK
SKS (Not all that interresting)
Mini-14
Century Arms FAL
Hungarian AK47 AKM
US M1 30 Carbine National Ordnance

What is the best option?

Well, my local gun shop has a DPMS Sportical for $799.

They can be found, it just takes some looking.

Yeah, I've seen some ARs locally for under $1000 ($700 IIRC). As for your options listed above, do you have any other guns in those calibers? That would be a major factor for me. Also, what would be its function? For SHTF/TEOTWAWKI, I would go with the FAL. For HD, the M1 carbine would be my pick. Of course, the others would do well too...

I would go for something .30 cal...variety is the spice of life. Maybe a Ruger Mini-30, Or try CMP and get one of those nifty M1 carbines or garands for a steal of a price.

Why is the sks "not interesting". They are great rifles for the price. But if you have money i guess there are better options. Always take caliber into mind as well. 7.62x39 is much better then 5.56. You can buy an ak but there pretty worthless in semi auto.

The only two on your list I have any experience with are the M1 Carbine and the Mini-14. Both are fun and reliable. Both have about the same accuracy. The mini-14 will have longer range. The Mini-14 will have better ammo selection/availability but more expensive magazines, if you plan on purchasing after market hi-cap mags.

What will you be using it for?

THey are selling unissued Yugo SKSs here for 319.

I wouldn't be to quick to label them as uninteresting.
