Never being one to follow the crowd, I think the perfect H/D shotgun is a Mossberg 500 Cruiser in .410. Indeed. Mossberg even sells it as the "Home Defense" shotgun. Why, you ask? Well, it's small enough for a woman to handle without fear of recoil, and a .410 buckshot (#3, I believe) has 5 pellets the size of a .38 travelling at 1200'/sec. The pistol grip minimizes the size for maneuvering, and I don't think there's a lot of careful aiming when an intruder is coming towards you.
You guys with your turkey shooters will be banging into everything in the house with the barrel pointed at the ceiling. I'm just saying. |

on the jamming.....I've seen Remington pump shotguns jam and its pain in the rear, hence the reason the spoon should have the slot in it so you can use your pocket knife to work the shell out, I prefer the action on the Mossy ***disclaimer: this is not slamming Remington, I have an 870 as well as my Mossberg, and neither of them has experienced this issue, only seen other people's 870s do it, not saying a Mossy won't jam too don't know if its just coincidence or if its only with the action on the 870...any others comment? experience?

she just got a Saiga 410 and likes it, loaded 8rnd mag just cycles the handle and squeeze off rounds as for the turkey shooters, something is better than nothing, but most folks with HD shotguns have Mossy or Remington 18 or 20 inch barrels, not 28" vent ribs

I own both Remingtons and Mossbergs but ole Master Gunny much prefers the Mossy 500 for bump in the night situations. The very thing that most folks ***** about, the loose shaking sound, is the reason why. Mossys are built like AK47s (my favorite military rifle, if you haven't already guessed!) loose tolerances to handle bad environments. I have carried Mossbergs in the field , hunting, since 1955. I have carried them in the worst of weather and treated them like unwanted stepchildren on hunting trips. They have never failed me. I'm not saying a Remington 870 wouldn't either, but I haven't carried mine as long as the Mossys and can't say for sure on the Remingtons. If there are two guns I will always own it is a Marlin 60 and a Mossberg 500 (not "braggin" guns, but utterly reliable, both of them.)

I like my Mossy 500 over the 870 also, but don't have a choice at work, has to be the 870

For those of you with pistol grip only shotguns, how do you find the accuracy with the recoil? I have been debating getting a pistol grip cruiser for a while but I am curious as to the range it is accurate to.

My set up is similar to a lot here.
In the bedroom for last line of defense and hard hitting artillery is the Mossberg 590 sitting in the bedroom closet one step away from the bed. 20 rounds mounted on the gun and in the tube. (For zombie attack a 56 round bandoleer hangs on a hook next to it) A formidable way to say "Do Not Enter!" Handgun is Glock-23 with M3 insight tac light mounted for night time duty. I prefer a hand held tac light for general searching and use so I have a 120 lumen led flashlight with a lanyard. Slip on the wrist and I can drop it and get two hand grip on Glock if needed. My wife, especially when at home alone does a lot of cross stitch late at night while watching TV or is on computer. She has two pistols (usually revolvers) close by and prefers to have the AR-15 with collapsable stock and 30 rnd mag of Hornady TAP personal defense rounds sitting at the end of the sofa. Especially if I am out of town on a business trip. Whatever she chooses to use is situational based on circumstances. If she's piddling around the back of the house doing laundry or such, she takes a pistol in a little fanny pack she slings over a shoulder and carries around with her. ![]()

Shotguns For Home Defense?
I like the notion actually. At one time, all I had was a Mossberg 500 in 20ga for home defense. If that's all you've got, then so be it. It's the best you have no matter what ammo you choose. For me though, the shotgun isn't my first line of defense now that I have pistol. Although less powerful, it's more adept to close quarters, and especially in the dark even in your own home. I would have nothing to say to anyone who would rely on the shotgun solely for the first or only line of defense. I've patterned shotguns on the open range over the years out to ten meters in my quest for patterns of various ammo mainly in 12ga, and I might say that what impresses me the most thus far is #2 steel shot out of my Remington 870 Express. It opens better, and sooner than 00 buck at close range (7-10m) in my experience and my observations.
