Also, what are the best books out there on the fighting shotgun?[/QUOTE]

Louis Awerbuck is probably the foremost trainer on "The Gauge" (his pet term for the 12 gauge defensive shotgun).

He has some books and tapes out; a quick Google will turn them up.

I will re-iterate the advice NOT to do a "house clearing" by yourself.

I was SWAT for many years, and have made dozens of for-real dynamic and covert entries, and one was one of the training cadre for my team.

I'll tell you straight up... if I think there is an intruder in my house, one that I have not seen or am not certain of where he/she is, I'm going barricade and call the cops. By that, I mean I'm falling back to a defensible position and waiting for help.

This assumes its just me and the wife, which is usually the case. If you have family in the other parts of your home, and have an "active shooter" scenario, then you gotta go. Each situation is handled differently.

I have plenty of real-world experience searching dwellings/interior spaces for bad guys. You just don't do it alone if there is an alternative; not if you've got any sense...

fisrt I totally agree with ExSoldier, if you don't have a trained buddy or have tossed a nade or flashbang into your living room, clearing your house may not be the best idea;

it will be an even worse idea to do so with your shotgun/rifle barrel: a) sticking out around the corner in front of you tipping off the bad guy that you're about to appear to him or b) your muzzle is to the floor so you don't tip off the bad guy you're about to appear-but now you turn the corner and see the BG and have to raise up your muzzle before he shoots you

remember, no matter what ammo you choose for the shotty-know what other family members and invited guest's locations are & think about where the people are/must go to get you

I have both rifle and shotty and the wife knows how to shoot all of them too
I prefer the shotty for my HD long gun because it will be nasty if I'm forced to employ it....here's why:
in my case, I have a Mossy 500 loaded with 7 rounds of 00 ready in the closet, G21 and G17 in the bedside safe and AR & AK in the next that I can make ready almost instantly
if something happens I'll be grabbing one of the Glocks to make my way to closet to get the shotty, we'll get my son in the master room with us (room right across the hall), and it will be a defensive posture from there, if they want us they'll have to come down the only hall to our room at the end of the hall putting them in a perfect death funnel for me to throw lead into,
if need be I can get to the next room for the AR and/or AK, in the meantime the wife will have her G26 from her side of the bed hunkering down with the son and on the phone with 911 (or my police radio)

I definately would have to say shotty all the way. I agree with an earlier poster: youth stock, 18 inch barrel and you're ready for zombies! Though I have mine loaded with 2 3/4 inch power shock slugs instead of shot shells. Just the way I like it.

I read through the whole thread and didn't see the following addressed so I apologize in advance if I missed it. Concerning a black rifle being used instead of a shotgun....... I have always wondered what the extreme muzzle blast of an AR would do to your ears inside. I know the shotgun is loud too, but I would venture a guess not near as bad as a .223 "shock wave". Is there anyone out there with some experience with this that could shed some light? I just wonder if the concussion of an AR inside would kind of knock the senses out of me too. (Making it harder to make good decisions and/or good shot placement)
I guess my vote here would be for a shotgun for HD over the rifle.
Open choke....... low recoil rounds..... white light on forearm.
That said...... I would be able to use it to fight my way to a rifle if things were really bad!

If my family is safe (away from home or behind me) I'll be in a defendable position, behind cover, waiting for LE help. There are no possessions in my home worth killing/dying over. My preference? A "social" Rem 870 with sights & a tact light.

I doubt it would be enough to inhibit shooting or tactical decision making skills. Soldiers in combat shoot indoors without ear protection all the time, and manage to stay in the fight. Long term hearing damage may be more of a concern (with a shotgun or pistol as well). Some folks I know keep a set of electronic hearing protection with their home-defense gun.

*** Yea..... that's why I'm hoping to hear from someone who has actually experienced it first hand. I am curious if it is a bigger deal or a smaller deal than I think.
