Weapons used included 45acp, M16, and the SEAL version M60. We weren't strictly special ops but we were at the time the army's High Tech Test Bed for all new equipment. WE had the Armed Dune Buggies before anybody else and WE were the primary decision makers for the HUMVEE. WE were the first outfit since Vietnam to dust off the MK19 and mount it on the dune buggies. Anyway, the only thing I can say is that even with the itty bitty ear plugs, the noise was LOUD but we could function effectively. Still, I did have the permanent long term hearing loss, albeit not too much. I only manifest it when my wife wants me to do chores.

![]() Man...... unbelievable how loud it was. Stupid thing to do but now I know. That's why I personally just don't see it as the best HD option. It is an awesome choice for some folks I'm sure, just not my First Choice. (Just MHO folks...... you can beg to differ of course) I can't even imagine what it would do to my hearing to shoot that thing a few times inside my house. They say the adrenaline rush blocks it out and you don't remember the percussion..... but I would think after the fact you sure would. Just my 1 cent folks (I used to be able to afford to give 2 cents) JP

Nobody mentioned the mighty .410. Mossberg, I believe, made a home defense model designed for smaller framed shooters. There are buckshot loads and slugs for the .410. I think three to five 000 buck and the slug approximates a .45. With the buck lined up in a row in the .410 I can't help but think they'll only spread a little at HD distance.
I've gotta say that if you clearing your home you've gone past home defense. Now you're in cop mode and unless you have the training are well over your head. Set up your home and home defense weapons to make it as easy as you can to protect those you love. Possessions be damned. If it happens in the middle of the night and I can protect the people I love by staying in the bedroom and shouting "I have a gun!" I'll dial 911 and listen to them loading my stuff all night or until law enforcement shows up. |

I dont know alot.. but I have a Maverick 88 from mossburg with 3" mag in 00b.. I would like to get a pistol grip, a Tac light with it and a shorter barel. maybe a m4 stock for it!
I have 2 kids 10/8 with a split bedroom floor plan. The more I think of it.. I wish the kids where on the same side as me and the wife. I might change my first two rounds to a lighter load because of over penetration. I have a .45, and a .38 but I think the 12gs is the best for me. But I think the number one reason is the sound of the pump action that cant be beat. Good thread James

Nothing can make you feel warm and fuzzy in the middle of the night like a 12 gauge pump by your bed. Seriously, I dont think you can beat a 18 in pump for home protection.

So would a .22 LR. I don't want to be shot by one.
If the .410 was so effective for SD, I would think you would see it in use more by LEO. Now you have a .410 from a pistol. Just not sure anymore if the judge is practical or gimmick.

Oh, man all this talk and the pics people posted of their hardware are making me blush......(that is my wifes' words reading this thread!)
Seriously, my take is definitely Shotgun all the way. Benelli or Remington, either can light up your BG in style.... And no .223 or even a subgun can concentrate the kind of massive firepower a good semi-auto 12 gauge can.
