Personally, I'd hold out for an 870. You can find police trade-ins for pretty cheap ($200-$300 depending on options and condition), and you just can't buy a tougher, more reliable repeating shotgun. Functionally, the 870P is the very best of the 870s, and even used, it'll probably still be around for your grandkids. See my sig line for my idea of the perfect HD/ general purpose working gun for my situation. Some people will want this option or that, but the 870 is so popular you can get basically anything you could ever want for one. I've got a 12ga. Wingmaster I use mainly for breaking clays and farm use (and HD until I find a dedicated replacement). I got it used, and I've put thousands of rounds through it from cheap value-pack target loads to slugs to 3.5" 18 pellet 00 buck (ouch), and have yet to have a single malfunction. It just works every time, and the action cycles beautifully. It's the smoothest running pump gun I've ever shot.

The only shotgun my father ever owned was a Remington...

So natuarally I went with the 870 for my HD.

Best gun by far!

if for some reason you do run out of rounds....you can beat the BG to death with it and not put a scratch on it.

Get the best of both worlds, a Mossberg 500

Maverick 88, by Mossberg. Same as an 870 for the most part but cheaper.

Shop around for a used 870. I am in upstate NY and I just bought my 5th 870 (four 12 Gauge and one 20). I found a used 870 Wingmaster in 12 Gauge- it is mid-eighties vintage. I paid $180 for it. Functions absolutely like new. Now granted, it has a 26 inch vent rib barrel on it- but you could always have it cut down. Or you could buy a home-defense-length barrel and also still be able to duck hunt with it!

Most of you guys are blowing smoke

I will take the Partner pump against the 870 any day. I own both. the Partner will take any accessories the 870 has except the barrel. It is the same as the norinco shotgun. It is built like a tank.

Go with the 870 and get the $30 rebate from remington as well

http://www.remington.com/pdfs/REM_CouponF09.pdf

Remington usually has small rebate offers like this.

About 350 on a P or Wingmaster, about 200 on a express. And I'd rather the profit pay all that for an American worker.

But, lets not forget that value means nothing unless their is somebody willing to pay the price.
